Naim and Roon?

Posted by: ChrisByrd on 19 June 2016

I've just read Andrew Everard's essay on Roon in July Gramophone.  It's a good article, what caught my eye was the inclusion of Naim in the list of hardware manufacturers Roon Labs has connections with.  Naim and Roon Labs have been very tight lipped on this, so is this a sign of things to come?

I've let my Roon subscription lapse, partly because of frustration with some of their metadata - particularly for operas - but mostly because I'd hardly used it since getting an SU.  A Roon Ready SU might tempt me back.

Naim have stated on the forum (if I recall correctly) there are no plans currently to add Roon comparability.

If you want to use Roon with Naim you'll need to add something like a Raspberry Pi with digital output board; or perhaps something like Sonore's microRendu or SotM SMS-200 with a separate USB to SPDIF converter.

Roon is certainly not 'tight-lipped': Naim is on the list of manufacturers of 'Roon tested players' on the roonlabs.com site, which says that such devices have been "profiled and tested by both Roon Labs and the device manufacturer for maximum compatibility".

From personal experience, my Roon set-up finds my Mu-so Qb as an output device via AirPlay, but not my other network-capable Naim devices.

I can't recall an official Naim comment but I may well have missed it.

Roon has a relatively small footprint "bridge" program that I would imagine will be included in the new line of Naim streamers that will come with the new 555 or statement streamer which cannot be too far away now.

I'm a Roon convert  and have a connection on my 3 Naim systems utilising SBT, Raspberry Pi and NUC to Hugo TT. No way back for me, Roon has won the argument for streaming over CD for me which DNLA / n-stream didn't.

Not official, but it was reported in https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...want-tidal-we-want-r that Naim's Marketting Director said '[The] possibility of seeing Roon sometime soon, the position was a very definite "NO".'

Like Sloop John B, I'm a Roon convert having used it extensively on my iMac with a pair of KEF EGGS. The EGGS are superb desktop speakers by the way!

As a result i've been looking at how to get Roon into my 272. The solution i'm currently experimenting with is an "on loan" Chord 2Qute using USB from the iMac. This work well and sounds excellent but the next step is a Sonore microRendu which will allow the iMac's return to my office.

What I wasn't excepting was the significant jump in sound quality which is in no way a criticism of the superb 272. The 2Qute has been in place for 2 weeks now and Roon/2Qute is the go to option for me. I've never heard the Hugo but have read the reams of comment on here since its launch and I notice many forum members pairing Hugo with the NDX & ND5 XS with good results, but never the 272.

Now I fully appreciate using the 2Qute and Roon with the 272 is making a significant reason for having the 272 redundant. However, Sky, Blu-Ray, Apple TV all come through the 272 to good effect and of course there is iRadio which I use all the time.

The question is, if Naim make their streamers Roon Ready can I forget the Chord 2Qute?

Apologies Andrew, I was only thinking of the network capable devices and of being able to use RAAT in place of UPnP.  Naim doesn't appear on the main Roon Labs partners page and I'd missed it on the Roon tested players page.

I'm very happy with the sound of the SU using MinimServer and have found MinimServer 100% reliable, and don't really want to buy extra hardware to allow me to run Roon.  Roon is a great concept though, so I might well return to it in the future.

No need for apologies: was only clarifying why I mentioned it in the Gramophone article.

Well you don't need the Chord 2Qute to get Roon ... Something like the microRendu plus a USB to SPDIF converter would do the job similarly but use the 272's DAC.

However what you may be finding is that you prefer the sound of the 2Qute to the sound of the 272's DAC.

For clarification (for anyone finding this thread in the future mainly) the only Naim devices which can be connected to Roon directly is the MuSo and MuSo QB which operate via AirPlay.

Roon on a Mac Mini is also my primary music source (through DAC V-1), I love the user experience and access to my own music + Tidal integration. Sound quality is great, especially in combination with HQ Player. After all positive reviews and experiences, I pre-ordered the Sonore microRendu which should improve sound quality even more. I would love Naim to integrate Roon in some of their products but that does not seem to happen soon.
