Which CD Player for Nait 5SI

Posted by: nsajuve on 20 June 2016

Hi everyone. after some research ( called the naim customer service etc ) i found out that the naim cd 3.5 player which i had bought used is reaching it's end of life & the fix is not an option.

https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...-supply-for-a-cd-3-5

So here i am with new questions for you guys. Here is my setup :

Naim Nait 5si --> NAC A5 --> Kef LS50

Pioneer N50K Network Player ---> RCA ---> Naim Nait 5si

I must choose a new cd player. For now i have 3 models in mind :

  1. Naim CD 5Si ( i've been told that this is not worth the many and that i shoud look for a used cd5x instead )
  2. Naim CD5X
  3. I've been also suggested a Rega Saturn-R

The problem is i don't know which cd player will fit my Naim's sonic type.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

please sudition the cd5si for the naim nait 5si.. sometimes others opinions might not be your own.

I own a CD5XS ( i got a pre owned piece ) and that matches well too..

and to top it all... i tried a Philips CD750 and i found it nice too.. it differs from the Naim CD5XS in the sense that its more relaxed and well suited for 1970's music - you know easy going stuff ( but not slow - by any means ) whilst the CD5XS tracks the ebbs and flows really well.

I was tempted to try the Philips CD960 / CD880 or an old Sony CD player but i let it be... there has to be an end some where !! But i dont know in future...

;-))

njoi !

Thanks MPW... i don't want to get a vintage player... since the parts are not easy to find. The problem is that i can't audition any Naim players.. as the dealer is gone...

I think the Apollo is slightly richer in tone than the 5si but if you can get a CD5XS it's a no brainer. Superb player.

Good luck.

If you have the network player, why do you need another CD player. I'd keep the CD3.5 until it expires and put the replacement funds towards an external DAC for the Pioneer if you need to spend some money.

If you like the sound of the CD 3.5 with the Nait 5si, then I think you'll find that the CD 5si complements the Nait really well.

But then so does the CD 5XS, and it has more resolution and more subtlety whilst retaining the 'bounce'.
A s/h one of these is the logical replacement for a CD 3.5, but I don't think you'd be disappointed with a CD 5si either, the XS just adds even more!

Purchased an ex-dem  Densen B440-XS within the last couple couple of weeks along with it's DNRG power supply. I think I have a real bargain. Hugely entertaining cdp having been compared to Naims own CDS3. If the opportunity arises I would strongly recommend a listen.

Posted on: 20 June 2016 by nsajuve

@Cyclo : The Densen costs 4000 euros here in Italy.... it's out of budget.

@HUGE: The problem is i don't know if i should trust online ebay resellers for a used CD5X....The only new cd player that i can afford right now is the CD 5si ( if it's a Naim ).

I can get a Rega or sthing else... but i don't know of they match my amp....

@James N : Actually i'm collecting cds.... getting rid of a cd player is not an option i think...

That is a lot of Money for the Densen. My ex-dem was under half of that. If you have a dealer within a reasonable distance it might be worth asking if they will sell you one if you like it after an audition of course.

Take a look at Marantz excellent value for money. I recently purchased the universal player UD 7007 extremely refined and versatile , great sound with 2 channel music. If you are not interested about universal player then I suggest you the SA 8005.

I'm collecting CDs too, because they're cheap. Then I rip them and stick them in the loft. If you were prepared to do that, you could look for a used ND5 XS to replace both your CD player and the N50K. Of course, if you prefer to play CDs that's a perfectly valid approach, but for me, moving to streaming is the way forward.

Go with the matching cd5si - synergy is a factor even within the Naim family.  I've owned the matching cd5i/nait5i and they were great together - ruined the fun by upgrading to a cd5x which didn't have a complementary sound and is nothing special without the flatcap anyway.

If you are happy to stay where you are with the amp then the CD5si is the obvious choice as they are a superb package together. If not, then up the ladder you go so to speak...

I think it's a bit harsh to say the CD5si is not worth the money, it's very well made and extremely musical.

If you want a CD player I'd go with the matching 5si. Then you won't be tempted by power supply upgrades and all that malarkey.

Don't buy a CD player, but a EXTERNAL HHD drive to plug into your pioneer N50Ks USB input- or better still an external SSD drive and store all your existing cds,  and you can also take full advantage of 24bit 192khz audio output of your pioneer with HI RES audio files - which cant be achieved with Compact Disc.

If you don't like the DAC in your pioneer or its overall sound quality then  look at using its digital outputs for maybe a NAIM DAC V1 or Chord DAC into your NAIT 5si

If you are collecting CDs then you could buy an external PC CD drive and connect it via the  USB digital input at the back of your PIONEER or connect digitally to a pc with a cd drive.

Your PIONEER N50K has many options moving forward, you don't really need an expensive stand alone CD player that will probably have a poor resale value in the future

As usual, the 'don't buy a CD player' brigade are out, even though the OP wants to buy a CD player.

Its 2016 and you don't have to buy a stand alone cd player, the OP must have purchased his pioneer N50K in the knowledge of its flexibility and the possibility of playing CDs in many different cheaper ways.

Its good to get a varied options and opinions in a forum so the OP can decide the best way forward

So if someone asks what dac to buy we should all recommend a CD player instead?  The OP wants a CD player, 2016 or not, he wants a CD player.

No Gary, if someone asks for advice on a dac we usually recommend a 272 instead

NAIM CD5si.

There you go, an easy non informative standard answer.

Thank you all for the replies... Actually i have only used my system for 10 times maybe... Since i'm going to travel abroad for my job... I have boxed everything a month ago... The whole point here is that my cd 3.5 which i buoght second hand has always had some problems... Like err messages etc... So i decided to buy a new one before my journey.

So basicaly the Pioneer and the Nait 5 SI are brand new... I bought it because i have a buffalo NAS with 6 TB of space which has plenty of Flac HIRES files in it... And the can be played with Pioneer with no problems. I think at my system's level... The pioneer can do a decent job... However playing a cd is much easier... In situations like when someone brings you a cd and asks you to play it on your system etc.

I'm going to buy a TT in the near future... Whit an external phono amp (thinking of the Rega Planar 3 (the old one) and it's phono stage).

But for now i'm thinking of a cd player... The Nait 5si costs around 1600 euros here... The CD5X can be fouend at around 1000 euros used...

I think i should go with the 5Si... And i hope that it would be a good match for the nait 5si and the kef LS50s.

At least i hope so....

When my last CD player started playing up, reaching end of life as they all do, i decided that was the time to switch to streaming from hard disk, which I saw as the future medium (it helped that I had already ripped my vinyl collection and copied to CD, but still had the ripped files on HD as backup - so I had a chunk of music ready to run.

So that's what I did, investing in streaming instead of an inherently limited-life CD player  - it was quite a learning curve and I ended up changing everyining within 2 years, going from happy to extremely happy in the process, though if I knew what I know now at the start I could have saved money, it would have given me less experience.

However, it seems that you're already into streaming, so considering it as an alternative to CD presumably is not a solution.

I have seen all of the CD5 variants praised on this forum.  My good experience with a CD5X + FC2X proved to me that even a fine all-purpose player like the Oppo BDP95 is no match for a Naim CD player.

Hard to go wrong, I recon.  If a home dem is not possible, sponsoring your own demo by buying a reliable used unit is low risk with a CD5-anything.

Good luck.
