No AirPlay on Naim streamers ... a workaround solution!

Posted by: Eloise on 21 June 2016

So a commonly requested feature is for Naim to implements AirPlay on their streamers.  Well it's not native but I have come up with a working method.

First off you'll need LMS installed somewhere on your network.  I currently have version 7.8.0 installed on a Linux / Vortex box but any newish version should work installed on a NAS or a Windows or OS X computer.

You then need to add two plug ins.  First you need the ShairTunes plug in - this is the trickier part of the equation and may take some technical nouse.  I was fortunate in that there is a package for Vortexbox so a couple of clicks was all it took to install but I recall its more complicated usually.

The second plug in you need is the UPnP/DNLA Bridge made by "Philipe".  This can be found here -- http://forums.slimdevices.com/...NA-players-with-LMS-(squeeze2upnp)  Once you have both components installed, you should be able to see any DLNA player available under Squeezebox interface (web interface or via a app such as iPeng) and they will also be available via AirPlay from iTunes or your iOS device.

One thing I did find, you probably want to turn the UPnP/DLNA Media Interface off; otherwise you'll see two renderers for each of your UPnP streamers on your network and everything gets a little complicated and circular.

Hope this helps someone.

Hi Eloise, even tough it seems  you put quite a lot of effort into it, it still seems complicated and I think that many of the potentially interested users might get lost in the process . I've added an AppleTV ( 80 euro for an old  non-hdd version- mk2 I think) next to my Nd5xs via optical out and  it works fine : instant access, automated stand-by, I benefit a lot from hooking it up via HDMI to my TV for enjoying also the  video stream.  Pay attention: last  AppleTV version with apstore and everything (mk3 I think) does not have optical out anymore...

Hope that helps,

Bogdan.

I don't disagree it's complicated.  To be honest it was something I discovered by accident that worked rather than a solution I sought out.  It's only a casual solution for me which I use primarily for podcasts, etc.

One advantage over the Airport Express or Apple TV is that it selects the required input on the Naim when you start to play.

Not saying it's a solution for everyone ... But it's an option out there especially if you're running a Vortexbox where it's almost out of the box working.  The Apple TV or Airport route is much easier (another option now is the Sky Q boxes)

PS the latest version of Apple TV is Mk4.

Hello Eloise,

I've just got the Unitilite and love to have someway that the itune can "see" my new Unitilite. I followed your steps but was lost in the middle steps.

1. Installed the Logitech Media Server and have an icon on my desktop.

2. Went to http://forums.slimdevices.com/...ce-ShairTunes-Plugin and saw two links.

https://github.com/DSTMK/shairport_helper
https://github.com/DSTMK/shairport_plugin

Downloaded the helper and plug in but didn't know what to do with zip files.

3. Went to https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...-workaround-solution

but didn't know what to do there either.

Long story short, I was really confusing how to complete the entire process do On my Itune page, I'll see the Unitilite.

I need help!!!

Sorry I didn't notice your reply to my thread (and to note what you said in the other thread, I'm a "she" not a "he").

I don't have time to look further for you today ... but if you could let me know if you are running LMS on Windows, MacOSX or Linux I will try to give you some more guidance in the next couple of days.

In the meantime ... is http://forums.slimdevices.com/...Airtunes-on-your-LMS any more help?

It was my bad. I apologize for not recognizing your name.

I'm using Windows 10. Please explain in details when you have time.

Thank you.
