Hi, you don't say which model DAC you are referring to or what you mean by upgradable. Naim manufacture 2 standalone DACs, the DACV 1 and the NDAC. The DACV 1 can be upgraded by adding a powerline mains lead whereas the NDAC can be upgraded with a powerline lead and/or a separate power supply such as the XPSDR or the PS555DR.

If you want to know whether your DAC can be updated with newer firmware, you should check the Customer Support/Product Updates section of Naim's website.

Hello SJBABBEY,

  • S/PDIF  Added support for DSD64, 32kHz -192kHz, 32-bit USB , et
  • Added support for DSD 64 and DSD128, 32kHz - 768kHz, 32-bit

My appologies for the confusiomn.

I seem to remember one NDAC user having trouble updating an older unit to new firmware, as the update could only be done from the current firmware version. This was during beta testing, so may not apply to the production firmware, but you could check with Naim support before trying it.

The Naim DAC was introduced in 2009 and this model is still current (according to Naim's Product History site). The Products Update page indicates that the previous update (to provide compatability with FLAC files) was in May 2010 so I would expect that if your DAC was manufactured after 2010 and can play FLAC files then you should be able to update to the latest firmware version 4.11.8.

However, Chris's suggestion is a good one and it can do no harm to contact Naim Support for confirmation.
