heavy rains...

Posted by: ken c on 23 June 2016

we have just had the heaviest rain i remember -- the road drain is blocked so water was gushing into our garage (and just about to overflow into our utility which leads to my listening room ) and threatening to flow though the hallway into the house. at this point i went out in the very heavy rain and tried to clear the main drain in the road, just in case there was stuff blocking it -- yes there was -- but water was quite deep and i wasnt making that much progress. so i decided to address the little drain just outside the garage -- just tried best i can to clear as much debri as i can --here i made some progress, i could sense the water was draining a bit better -- but i think its the fact that the rain became a little lighter that was the saviour.

anyone else experienced similar?

Hi Ken,

Let's hope the worst is over. The rain has subsided here near Newmarket but the large puddles will stay for a while as we are at sea-level here. No flooding in the house. Fingers crossed for everyone.

I have to say I can't remember the last proper Summer, maybe 6 or 7 years ago?

This year seems even worse. At least if The Sun was out when it wasn't raining it may not be so bad but it feels like almost permanent gloom. And then we get these incredibly heavy, sharp downpours to cap it off.

In my area I have already seen quite some rain recently. Basically daily switching of the system for thunderstorms. Normally you have an occasional thunderstorm in July and June and May are just sunny and dry.

so something is definitely wrong in the last couple of years...

Quite bad here too (Northern France). System off most of the time.

Ken, good luck with the cleaning and drying.

An intersection north of our house after a very large storm. It remained closed for half a day though the traffic lights kept changing in case someone showed up with a canoe.

Ironic how these things seem to balance out on a global scale. We haven't had a "normal" winter in the Puget Sound region the past seven or so years. Snow in low latitudes has become rare. Mid-winter is drier with warmer days and colder nights, although the rain and winds associated with storms is more intense. If it's raining hard somewhere on the globe it's likely drier elsewhere. Individual observations, yet seem consistent with predictions of global warming trends made some 20 or 30 years ago .

No problem here, Ken.  As I'm a nice guy, I offer to look after your 500s for you in case you are worried

of course i'd be happy to do that Graham, but you need 3 of them -- and wonky in your system is no good

Its threatening to rain again -- i am still clearing the garage -- so not too happy about forecast.

i dont really understand why houses are built lower than the level of the road -- with the driveway sloping towards the house. this seems very daft now given what i have experienced.

ah well...  assuming it wont be as heavy tonite -- i will console myself with some music and a few glasses of a good red.

hope your mega system is still sounding as good as i remember...

luckily, i havent had to switch off the system -- i did that last week when i was going to be away o business -- as it happens, there was no thunderstorm while i was away, but better safe than sorry.

last night at the height of the storm, some water started sipping through into out utility room towards my office/listening room -- but i think i managed to get the drain working a bit better and after that the rain was a little less heavy anyhow -- Phew!!!

didnt fancy having to move the SL2 and my active system upstairs

actually, this is almost what the road just outside our house looked like at the height of the downpour -- in fact a bit worse as the water was also flowing into our driveway towards the garage initially -- which it flooded very quickly ...

What do you mean las proper summer ... As far as I remember we've had a mix of sun, miserable cold weather and rain each year for the past 6 or 7 years... That's a PROPER British Summer isn't it?

None of this EU approved summer weather allowed here!
