New speaker buy or wait
Posted by: Ricto on 29 June 2016
I have just purchased the NAC 272 Streamer/Preamp and DR 250 Power amp. This is a big step up from my Roksan K2 amp and power amp. I now need to purchase speakers, my current speakers are Monitor Audio RS 6 Silver series. I am considering the Ovator S400 purely on price at 2500 my budget is upto 4K however I am willing to wait if spending more will seriously benefit the system.
The room size is about 20 foot by 16 foot.
I appreciate every one is different and I should listen to these speakers first however I really do not have the time or patience to demo multiple speakers and therefore I am putting my trust in you guys. I am looking for maximum sound for my buck. My other thought would be get the Ovators now in loo of part exchanging in a few years to upgrade.
Any thoughts opinions would be appreciated.

Sounds like a great room and system for S400s. Ovators are not everyones cup of tea, they are mine, but if they really don't work and you can sell them without too much loss, why not. I'm guessing they are not from a dealer at that price? but if they are, just arrange to try them even if there's a small charge.
Hi Gary
Yes they are from a dealer only down side is they have to be Cherry wood which is not a big problem. Just worried that they will not do the system justice but like you say how much can I lose.
The other thing is the RS6 speaker sound quite good so will I not just be impressed with anything I attach to them, guess Im worried about what I could be missing! lol

I wouldn't be too worried about them not doing the system justice. I used them with a CDS3/252 etc, and they were more than good enough to show what it could do.
Thanks Gary
Just bought them so will let you know how I get on. Whats the running in time do you think?
They take about a month to start to open up, and from memory they continued to improve for a further 6-8 weeks. Expect a few periods of eneven performance at the beginning, and be prepared to experiment with positioning, like any other speaker. There's plenty of good advice on here if you use the 'search' function.
Good luck, i hope you enjoy them.

Wow!
Less than an hour, perhaps the Dealer was persuasive!
Enjoy, sounds like a nice deal.
Allante93!
I must be a shop keepers dream! But it is a good deal and as Gary said I can't lose much either way.

Mmmm might be having second thoughts dealer offered focal Electra 1028be for 3600.
Any one tried these two speakers ovator s400 and focal Electra 1028b?

Just go and compare the two for a start. If it's too late just accept what you have no forget it.
I have a 300dr powering my s400s and am more than happy with them.
Speakers? Just bring them home and listen in your home / room. I find that listening in the dealer's room, speakers sound quite different than in my own room. It's almost useless to me and I'll never (again) decide in the dealer's room only.

Nine hours between your posts. I'd say slow down and breath. Give some consideration to speaker positioning in your room. The Ovator's BMR and crossover point have a decidedly different presentation to mainstream speakers and may require days or weeks of auditory reconditioning on your part to appreciate how or where they are working in your room. Add to that the notion that seeking speaker advice on an audio forum is akin to asking folks on an automotive forum "what color car should I buy?"
Ovators S400 - yes!!!!
Very good choice - they will take up to 1 month to settle down. But then - wow!
you will love them.
Just make sure you use NAIM speaker cable to make your NAP250 comfortable.
Ovators - placement.
Took me 4 months to find a final place for them
they are indeed different to other speakers.
But it's wonderful experience

Sound advice from joerand. Unless you're in a hurry to burn through your money slow down. Search the forum - you will find that the S400's are what's referred to in the UK as a "Marmite" speaker - they attract polarised opinion. I tried them and was completely underwhelmed. In the dealer demo I thought the Focal 1028be was much nicer; but then when I demoed them at home they would not work in my own room and were very boomy. Hence the second piece of good advice on offer - NEVER buy speakers without a home demo.
I might add 'all' speakers are Marmite speakers. I have never heard a Focal speaker that i could listen to for more than 5 minutes. I do agree that everyone should hear speakers at home before making up their mind. In this instance however, the OP stated clearly he wanted advice on a particular deal and didn't want to audition. He has since asked about another deal, and at this point, audition advice is the only one i'd now give.
Thanks for the advice very valuable.
A slight turn on the analogy by Joe Rand If you do buy a car buy a black one never a pink or yellow one. Firstly it never goes out of fashion, is always sort after when you come to sell it, is more sellable and looks good. All in my opinion but the type of advice that I am looking for in this forum. I know at the end of the day its my ears, however I am not sure exactly what my ears are looking for and that i when i do get speakers what Ive missed from not auditioning other speakers. Also I am price conscience which I feel you can not be if you take up dealers time with home auditions then beat them over the head with price, it would annoy me anyway.
However if some one said " Whatever you do don't buy XXXX they are rubbish or look at XXXX as they are excellent value for money over the choices you have selected" then I would heed their warnings.
Hope this makes sense, and thank you for everyones input as I know you have my best interests at heart through their own experiences.

Never buy a black car. They are most unplasant when parked in sunshine, heating up more than pale coloured cars, they show the dirt more tha everything except possibly white cars, and while they have the advantage of looking smaller than white cars too many make aggressively styled models look more aggressive.
I've never had the luxury of choosing the colour of a car - just down to what of the very few models I like is available at an affordable price - but have so far not suffered black. Best appearance wise was a lovely pale metallic blue, and beautiful shape (Audi 100S coupe). But that's not a good analogy for hifi, where what matters most is performance not appearance. Best performance I had was a Saab 9000 full turbo, colour a nondescript dark grey, and I made it more nondescript by removing the 'turbo' decals as I had no desire to advertise its desitability to anyone who might have liked to deprive me of its use. Speaker wise, I'd have the Saab any day. (And car-wise I would if Saab still existed, and hadn't changed before their demise to less capable GM machines.)
Not sure if that helps much! With cars, as with hifi, everyone has their own individual taste, likes and dislikes of various practicalities and aspects of performance etc. but of course what people can do is suggest models to try that you might not have thought of. So if you haven't heard already, if you like to be able to achieve full bass I commend listening to the bigger PMCs, and as with cars I always suggest secondhand - except unlike cars they can last a lot longer, and any servicing like recapping crossovers is needed maybe only every 10-20 years, not annually.
