PMC 20.21 issue... Any ideas...?

Hi there.

I purchased a pair of 'new other' PMC Twenty.21 speakers from a well know auction site, from a well reviewed and regarded seller it would appear. They were apparently only taken out of the box to photograph for the auction, but were a 2011 serial number. Well, after moving house I have today set my kit up (282, 250.2' hicap, nac a5) to find an issue with one of the speakers. This has only come to light this evening when I put an old test record on to find I'm all but missing (it is extremely feint) the left hand speaker. I've checked phase, cabling etc. (The right hand speaker sounds fine) but nothing helps, so I moved swapped the speakers over and the same issue occurred when I moved the left hand speaker to the right. Has someone sold me a dud pair? Have I done something stupid, do I need to send them to PMC to get them looked at?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

I may be mistaken, but they must be very early 21s. From your description it would appear that there's something wrong with one of them, but as there is a twenty-five-year guarantee, PMC can probably help?

Or twenty years? I can't remember exactly.

At the risk of sounding more stupid than I am (which is quite stupid), when you said you "moved left hand speaker to the right", what exactly did you do? Did you swap the connections on the 250, or physically move the speakers. And was the problem on the same side or on the same speaker?

I suppose the simplest test would also be to just stick any ol' pair of speakers on there and confirm that the problem goes away or to connect the 21's to another amp and confirm the problem persists.

Hi there. I swapped the 2 speakers over from left to right to rule out any issue with the 250. The issue remained with the speaker I moved. Yes according to the manual they have sternly year guarantee so I'll call them today. EBay man now claims he actually used them for testing only (what ever that means) and they were perfect when he tried them. To be fair if he was in a smallish listening room (like me, hence getting them) they appear so good at locking the image in the middle he may not have noticed. It was only when the metronome test started on the test record that it became apparent

Using a test record then I guess the TT could come into play, perhaps an imbalance there. Could be something as simple as the bias setting. Did you use the test record successfully with your former speakers? Assuming your former speakers are still on hand then revert to those and see if you get a balanced result as FZ suggests. Might also be good to power down and repeatedly unplug/replug all system connections to make sure all contacts are clean.

Hi. I've tried it with other sources too as my first thought was an extreme bias setting. Unfortunately it persists. The sound from the faulty speaker is harsh and tinny with no bass at all. I shipped my old motive ones yesterday before I set up the new one so can't test with other speakers.

I assume they were shipped to you - if so, it sounds like maybe one of the speakers got damaged internally, perhaps a jolt damaged a crossover solder joint?  Either way it looks like a trip to PMC is in order or else back to the seller.

Hi Richard, yes they were shipped to me. I had the back off it last night and nothing looked out of place, but this is far from my level of expertise. Guess it could be a dry joint also. I'll give PMC a call today and see what they say.

Have you fiddled with the jumpers? Otherwise sounds to me like a terminal/crossover/driver fault with the 'bad' speaker.

Yes, have tried them with the PMC solid ones and my NAC A5 ones that I've had made. Still it persists.

It sounds very much like the bass unit is not connected somehow.

Worth taking a look at the drivers too as these use spade connectors (to connect the speaker drivers to the cables which go to the crossover) which may have become dislodged - it's not clear from your original post whether the speaker is just very much quieter than the other one, or (as HH suggests) the bass driver is not working which could be something as simple as one of the spades connectors detaching.

If not then i'd go back to the seller and take it from there...

Turned out to be the cross over, have sent it back to PMC for repair. The warranty isn't transferable it would appear, but the seller has agreed to cover the cost of the repair..

liatening to the world in mono at the moment...!

That's good then. Hopefully the repair won't take too long.
