Dead UnitiServes Society

Posted by: Adam Zielinski on 04 July 2016

I think I will start a 'Dead UnitServes Society'. Qualification criteria:

As a founding member I will set an entry bar high: 3rd failure within 1 year. The last one was 3 months ago and tonight - it never starterd after a holiday shutdown.

Adam

PS. Off to my dealer tomorrow - this time I will request a new unit.

WW - I can't tell whether you're serious or not ... I'm certainly not

... I was referring to something I think is called a moosioo or something like that anyway which I felt and it had a big ring thing that I was told lighted up with nice coloured lights and I presumed was where I put by big black vinyly things ... am I wrong

On a serious note, the PR Naim gets from this forum is up to them, not us. We provide our experiences and opinions and whether this is good PR or not depends on the quality of the products we experience. In general, those Naim products are of great quality, it just so happens that some people have had less than good experiences with the US - I am not one of them and I have posted so in this thread.

I don't get your beef at all - we are not responsible for Naim's PR and, as far as I know, all posters have been truthfully reflecting on their experiences.

Further, since I saw your last post, WW

I thought my little joke was pretty obvious since everyone knows Naim does not do turntables and was certainly not for those "in the know" - and the fact I am blind is also on my profile.

We can get far too serious sometimes and a little levity can break things up for a wee while.

Sorry if you didn't get it and felt it was exclusive, certainly not the intention,

Allan

Firstly, why on earth would I be not serious ? How rude.

Secondly, I don't have any beef, Alan. I was commenting initially on how prospective buyers would be horrified by this thread. THAT IS ALL. it's true but....... I'm then attacked.

Secondly, your apparent humour regarding your condition is totally wasted on people who don't know your condition - and why should we have to guess ? How the hell can people guess your condition based on your sarcastic comments, your friends sniggerering and comments like "Fantastic Allen". Sorry I don't do politically correct.

Finally, your comment re. turntables was wrong....... you know it, please acknowledge when you make a faux pax and not try to insult the other side with smarmy comments to cover it.

EEEk, our last quotes 'crossed' and it appears we both sing from the same hymn book

now what we need is a virtual pub where we can all make up and buy each other a beer ...

Getting back on topic ...

No-one responded to a previous post where I mentioned the wifi remote supplied with the new range - will the core have one or is it only for the other units?

Seems like this will be a push/pull remote that could mean we don't need the app for basic operation - a boon IMO.

The Us is dead, long live the core!

In most instances you get the PR you deserve. Naim builds superb, reliable products and they rightly enjoy very good PR. But the UnitiServe is unusual. I am sure if you ask Naim themselves, they would admit the reliability of the US falls considerably below their normal high standards of all their other products. I also suspect Naim can't wait for the arrival of the Core as a replacement.

But I fully intend to tease Naim on here a bit about the US as it relaxes me having paid yet another repair bill.

Come on Naim, do a trade in deal of a US against a Core for all us loyal, long-suffering US owners. We deserve it!

Shall we move on?

No - lets get a petition going or a referendum. We are getting used to them...

Well, I've just had an hour with Phil Harris sorting out my back-up issues - where else can you get that level of service on a Friday night. Thanks a million Phil - nuff said!

I'll drink to that!

I actually own a pub and you would all be very welcome to come and sample my rather wonderful real ale if you are ever darn sarf.

Hic!

Allan, I've just spent a few minutes reading through the Naim website and a couple of other articles. All left me with the impression, albeit by omission, that the Core will not be capable of being controlled by the remote, only by the app.

Bit too close to the literal truth for some of us Allan!

There I go, dragging Naim's PR into the gutter.

I would like to add something to this thread , being the archdeacon in waiting as the jug serve has been resolute on service.  Perhaps a change to a core will be met by smoke blown up through the pope pipe.

Posted on: 18 November 2016 by ChrisSU

Lightning here, I'm shutting mine down just in case!

Posted on: 18 November 2016 by ChrisSU

Last time we got hit by lightning the house was full of smoke, mostly white. Quite a bit of it came from inside my US. After which, it was completely US.

Worse still I suspect that Naim might soon introduce a time limit beyond which they will no longer support the US (it has a third party aging OS) once the Core is fully established. Does anyone else have a view on this?

Well, Naim have a pretty good track record of providing support long past product discontinuation, so I'd hope for the best.

That "third party" is Microsoft.  As third parties go, they are pretty substantial.  The OS doesn't need "support," and I suspect that Naim have more than one backup of the Windows install they need to use.

When is the Core actually for sale?

Be good to get the views of anyone who has bought one!

Posted on: 19 November 2016 by Claus-Thoegersen

The interesting thing is how custome the hardware inside the Core is. Is it still a small standard computer in a Naim case with a Naim PS,  or how much of the hardware is made especially for the Core.

Yes, that's my conclusion, too: no naim server remote and certainly no VGA output on the CORE (for VGA on the unitiserve I use a nice 7inch DIY display). iPad-control is all that's left on the CORE, for understandable reasons, but it's a loss nevertheless.
