Dead UnitiServes Society
Posted by: Adam Zielinski on 04 July 2016
I think I will start a 'Dead UnitServes Society'. Qualification criteria:
- Have or have owned a US
- US has died at least once
As a founding member I will set an entry bar high: 3rd failure within 1 year. The last one was 3 months ago and tonight - it never starterd after a holiday shutdown.

PS. Off to my dealer tomorrow - this time I will request a new unit.
As suspected for some reason the NAS had decided to restrict guest/folder access activity to 'read only'. I went through everything and changed them back to 'read/write' then rebooted the NAS allowed it to settle; then rebooted the UnitiServe which worked away for awhile with the NAS and now everything is working as it should be. Have no idea what caused the NAS to do that in the first place though.

Thanks for the update.
Would you mind sharing, as a precaution for other members, what NAS and firmware versionare you running?
If I recall correctly there is no need to re-boot UnitiServe to force it to rescan the network. There is a function for that in the admin menu of the PC / Mac application.

I'm running a Synology DS214se and firmware is DSM 5.1-5055 (i've never bothered to update this based on "if it ain't broke don't fix it"). Although I chatted to my dealer yesterday and he suggested it could be worthwhile so will probably do it now.
Agree there was probably no reason to reboot the UnitiServe as you can rescan from the desktop client but was just trying to be as thorough as possible and minimise points at which the exercise could fail.
BTW - the IP address issue was my fault, i double checked the MAC address I had used for setting the static IP address on the US and was one digit out.
Hi King Size, I've always believed in keeping all my kit updated with the latest soft and firmware, especially when its free. I have my Synology set to auto-update, it just does it when the s/w is made available & it sends me an e-mail to tell me its done.
Coming from DSM-5 you will go straight to DSM-6.0.2 - 8451-1. If you are playing from the Synology as well as US & using Minimserver then you will probably need to reinstall it, if you are using Syn's Media Server you need to open the menu & check to see if it also has an update waiting & to click on the OK button. You will probably find the update will also load & "Open" some programs that are new & not used in audio, you don't need them all & just need to go to the Package Center > Installed, open each program's "Action" button & touch "Uninstall"; this just puts them back into the Package Store. I only have Media Server & Hyper BackUp open, Hyper is a new backup program & you will need it when you back up the Synology.

Glad to read it's all sorted now.
I tried to update DSM the other day, but it won't let me do it unless I delete Minim. Presumably it's then a simple enough matter to re-instal Minim afterwards, although I guess any settings (eg transcoding on the fly) would then need to be reconfigured.
My brand new UnitiServe SSD arrived today. Still sitting in its box though - I received a UK version with a UK plug, so a bit difficult to plug into a EU socket
I just had to laugh out loud this afternoon...
Hi
I have had my problems as well, but my attention goes to, what could possibly replace it and still keep the advantages that I find in US? Easy ripping, quick response when playing music or switching between the streamers. My US is the 2TB version, I also have a Synology 212J NAS. Ripping to and playing music from the NAS, it`s not quite the same. Any experiences?
I had to send it for repair once, due to my own fault and the service from distributor and factory... excellent.

Not really
I love my UnitiServe and will be putting it back on the network tonight.
Love mine too. I had an HDX for 6 years and it never put a foot wrong. On the strength of this and knowing that much of the innards are shared with the Unitiserve, I bought one to go with my NDS/555DR when I retired the HDX to that great emporium in St Albans. I'm delighted to say that it's been perfect since day 1. It even loves my new BT HH6....now where's that wood to knock on?
I've had a number of problems - not necessarily the fault of the US - and I think the desktop n-Serve app (on a Mac, at least), is sorely in need of an update but, now everything is ripped, I love it. Sounds great and I'm re-discovering loads of old cds previously stored in the loft.
[Edit - love it apart from the 'compilations problem'. I've got 400+ such cds so the clunky workaround suggested elsewhere on the forum is not an option. Apple iTunes can sort it - why not Naim?]
Well I have had my US for almost 4 years. I've had no problems. None that require service. Maybe the batches were more solid back then.

By your own admission (big mistake) you may not join the club.
US - united states, right?

Not this time, no
Up and running again with a brand new unit.
Ripping a new CD now, noticed a new message via n-Stream app. Appeared after AMG lookup failed, but others were ok. Screenshot below:
'Detecting drive features'.
Anyone seen this before?

Well, because Apple is a SW co while Naim is a Naim co.
To say "I love my US" might be overstating things a wee bit. And I have had to return the errant black box more than once. But it has given me sterling service while it has been in my system and (I have no hard evidence for this) seems to provide optimal SQ. It is also veeerry simple to use - a real plus for this simpleton.
You namby-pambies that have suffered no US breakdowns deserve no place in the 'Dead UnitiServe Society'.
Yours,
A reformed US basher, Chesham, England
The UnitiServe is playing up again. It sees the Store fine and will play from it but when I try to rip a new disc it spits it out and the system message says:
No music store could be located to hold this ripped disc. More disk space may become available after encoding of recently ripped albums has completed.
But under System Status the store is clearly visible with over 2TB of free space. The only anomaly is that it seems to appear twice firstly as the DISKSTATION network location - NAIM MUSIC [ONLINE] and then again as MUSIC STORE SUMMARY.
The only thing that has changed is I have updated the Synology software but all permissions etc are still as they should be.
Any ideas?
Update
Looks like the UnitiServe decided that the SSD drive was the location to rip CD's to (even though it said the Music Store was on the NAS). Anyway, I used the Web Client to raise the priority of the Music Store on the NAS and all is working now.
Does the local internal SSD drive even need to appear in the Music Store section or can I delete it? According to N-serve its status is (non-applicable) and its priority is "read only".
It shouldn't be appearing in a list of available shares.
Perhaps worth re-scanning your NAS.
It doesn't appear as a Share. It appears as d:\music in the Music Store section of the n-serve desktop client (and has always been there). Unless it's not the SSD but something else?
That is where you'd see an external USB drive if I'm not mistaken.
Reading threads her eon the Userve issues, I was also thinking that the userve was the most unstable of the servers. I talked to my dealer about it, because one of my friends have just changed from cd x2, to new userve plus used Ndac. My dealer said that they have never had any issues with userves.
We installed the system Tuesday and I was impressed with the nice half size box. I have thought that the userve was a plastic thing not housed in a Naim enclosure. I also really like the disk mechanism, no problems forgetting a disc in an open draw, just the disc waiting to be removed from the slot drive.
And the sound x2 vs userve ndac. Userve wins, so another happy Naim server customer.
