Turn table disaster

Posted by: dayjay on 12 July 2016

Just took ELO's Discovery out of its jacket and popped it on the turntable when, just before I put the needle on the disk I notice, to my horror, that the needle is bent way off to the left of the cartridge.  Having no option overwise I gingerly attempted to bend it back only to find that I now have no left channel output.  My lovely wife and son are out of the house but I suspect a cleaning or play misadventure that has been either undetected or quietly hushed up.  I will contact Rega to see if, on soome remote and unlikely chance, it is possible for a repair to be done but otherwise I suspect I am looking at a £900 new cartidge.  Ever so slightly gutted!

This happened to me years ago with my Troika cartridge. My dealer wrote a covering letter and estimate for the replacement and the insurance company paid up no quibble under accidental damage. After all on the phone to the insurers a conversation to the effect of I have bent the needle on my record player it will be x thousand pounds to replace might sound extreme to the cal centre operator without some back up from a dealer! Good luck with it should be no problem.

Fair play to you David, that's a very measured response to an expensive accident (compared to some threads on here threatening world peace for a simple mistake...).

Hope you get it sorted ok

My wife did this to a Linn cartridge many years back. Linn managed to fix it at no cost. When he cleaning lady did the same thing a couple of months later, they said it was beyond repair. Upgrade time!

Was your system connected via wire or wireless to the router? (I assume via Ethernet or some such means, but I may be wrong which is why I ask.)

Actually my Sky Box was connected by Ethernet to the router. Unfortunately the Sky Box was also connected to my pre and my NDac, which took the brunt.

I'm pleased to report that normal service has resumed.  After a lot of messing around with my insurance company who were completely out of their depth with a cartridge problem it was agreed that a rebuild was not possible and a nice new Apheta 2 was supplied.  Of course I'm now so scared of pranging it that I'm stressed to death but at least it's fitted and playing.

Well done getting sorted. Know what you mean about getting stressed - lifted my arm using the cueing yesterday but when went to move it my fingers did not to seem to grip at all. Was a few seconds when I thought I was going to drop the arm but somehow managed to hang on. An awful feeling!
