Narcom 4 Remote

Posted by: peli0011 on 13 July 2016

My Narcom 4 remote has stopped working - I have checked against other Naim units and it refuses to work with these confirming the remote is at fault.

i would welcome understanding if anyone knows how to open the unit to establish if it is something as simple as a loose connection etc which is causing the problem

i have noted that there are two small screws in the battery slots but removal of these also be does not help to get into the remote

i have tried new batteries to no avail

any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

Hello lola

thanks for your prompt response - I do not get the leds showing and I know the remote to be faulty - I would really like to know if anyone knows how to open the unit

thanks

The remote is not user serviceable.  If you have tried new batteries and tried it on other devices (remember to make sure you use the correct soft keys) then replacement with a new remote control is your best option.

Hello richard

Thank you for your comment. I appreciate that I may need a new remote but it does seems somewhat unsustainable and disappointing that it is not possible at least open the unit to see if it may be repairable.

Most remotes seem to be clipped together as well as having a couple of screws in them. Try removing the screws and then gently levering the sides apart from the bottom and gradually working upwards. You can get a plastic tool for this which I believe is used for taking phones apart.

As it stands it sounds like its a dustbin job, so you have nothing to lose by trying and much to gain, well a £100 remote anyway!

Good luck with it, let us know how you get on as it may help others in the same predicament in future.

If you do manage to fix the remote and/or have to replace it, it might be a good idea to back up its functions to a universal remote e.g. logitech harmony.

Dear all

many thanks for all your advice.

i did manage to take the remote apart (started by removing two screws within the battery compartment and then inserting the edge of a credit card from the start of the joint and gradually working my way up to the top of the remote - this required a bit of brute force - and did the same on the other side) and could not see any obvious signs of loose connections or dry joints☹️

I tried cleaning the circuit board with isopropanol (not sure if this is the right chemical) which did clean the board and did not leave any nasty residues - note I only used very very small amounts dabbed with cotton buds

having put everything back together again - miraculously some of the functions started to work !!?? (input selector, display dimmer ) but not the volume control - which is all I use.

anyway I have taken some pics of the remote being taken apart which I am happy to upload if any of you are able to educate me on how to do this from an iPhone

Many thanks again to all who have commented

Hi i recently bought a naim supernait 2 and this came with the new style remote which i was not keen on and preferred the older style VOLUME so i bought a remote (Universal remote control SeKi Slim adaptive ; f. kids + seniors) cost about £10 as i only need the basic functions for Volume and input this is fab for the price and all i use now.  its a learning remote so not sure how that helps with the Volume not working but the basic functions on this are excellent.

Simple control and very easy to handle.

Hello Gary

thats very helpful indeed - I'm sure I will be able to get hold of someone who has a Narcom 4 remote to allow the new remote to learn the required functions. £10 does seems a lot less painful than £100!!

In the end I purchased a used Logitech harmony 300 remote from eBay for £7 incl postage.!

cleverly the all the harmony range are programmed by plugging in to your computer and via their website you type in the name of your device ( in my case Naim xs 2)  and that's it - the remote works all the functions on my amp. I also programmed my tv and DVDs player which are all linked through the amp.

the remote is pretty robust and well made

thank you all very much again for your helpful comments which have helped me to save £93!!!
