How to backup HDX to a Synology NAS DS213j

Posted by: PPT on 14 July 2016

Hi guys, can anyone help me to configure my HDX in order to backup it to my Sinology NAS DS213j?

Is there any manual/white paper available for this?

Thanks

If you call Naim support they will be able to help you set up the NAS correctly and configure the HDX. There's not so much you need to do, but guesswork will get you nowhere, and once it's set up, backup is fully automated and you can forget all about it. Good luck.

I agree with ChrisSU but if you insist on doing things yourself, there are some articles in the Knowledge Base which are relevant, although not directly answering your question I think.  But reading them could give you a better understanding of what Naim support (Phil most probably) will tell you.  If you ask very nicely, Phil will even remote into your PC and set it up for you.

Please do start with the owner's manual.  Unbelievable as it seems, this topic is addressed there.  At least it's a start . . .

Then review the many threads here on the forum. Most are about 'how to back up the UnitiServe to a nas.'  The HDX and UnitiServe work the same in this regard, so all of the uServe info will help.

You need to have access to a share only used for backup on the nas. To make it easier to setup do not require login.

The following assumes you are using the desktop client on a Windows pc.

You  should be able to see the share from the desktop client.

On the tools tab open music repositories, scannable network shares, fine the share, it must be online. Press the "use as backup button".

Now you can setup a backup job using the share you have made into a backup, make a full backup if you like, and then create a backup job that backs up changed file each night.

On the tools tab open maintanence, go down to backup scheduler and use add to create a new backup job.

I found the knowledge base article perfect for setting up my Synology NAS as backup for my HDX.  Go to Naim Audio website / Customer support / Knowledge base / Setting up NAS as additional storage.

In there there are 3 links for specific makes of NAS, one of which is for Synology.  Download the paper and follow it.  I'm no IT expert but was able to do exactly what you want to do using this paper.

Have a look, it really was rather easy once I followed this.

Good Luck!

When I set up a Synology NAS last year I found the Naim guide was based on an old (2012?) version of the Synology software, and there were quite a few differences. It wasn't too hard to figure out the differences and get up and running though.

i seem to remember that this doc. only covers the NAS side though: refer to the manual for setup of the Naim device you're backing up.
