Serious bookshelf speakers

Posted by: nickpeacock on 15 July 2016

In the not-far-off process of buying a flat I am resigned to having less space. In particular, whereas I can just about get away with my Martin Logan Electromotion ESLs (which are indescribably magnificent), the near-certain reality is that nothing into which I will have to squeeze my middle-aged post-divorce self will allow me to continue with the MLs.

Hey-ho - onwards and upwards. I will be running NDX (just waiting for ex dem model to be available from Grahams in the next couple of weeks) + 252/SCDR + 250.2.

I'm looking for genuine bookshelf speakers (ie which don't have to be standmounts) which will give me the speed and transparency of the MLs. I want accurate but not heart-stopping bass, and speakers which work well at low to mid volumes.

In the past I have owned and enjoyed Harbeth P3ESRs, but they couldn't match the speed and transparency of my MLs. Grahams have suggested the B&W 805d3.

Assume that my budget can cope with anything up to the B&Ws (c£4500). Any other thoughts as to what I should try to audition? Direct experience from people who know what I mean about panel speakers would be much appreciated.

ATC7 is excellent. One of my favourite monitors. ( actually I prefer them over the 11s ) But you are right, tho, ATC speakers do need proper stands ( high mass ) to shine.

Here are another *book shelf* speakers: Power of analysis rivaling that of ATC speakers but Wilson monitors generally are unfussy in terms of placement and these Duette are certainly designed with lifestyle set ups in mind. They retains dynamics even at a low volume and won't flinch at high-ish SPL as the ATC.
Wilson Duette:

Wow, Kuma - just drooling over these - precious little chance of being able to afford them, sadly. Has anyone heard them with Naim amps?

That's a very pretty picture of the Wilsons. Unfortunately, they'd sound crap in that location.

I agree with yeti. You should only start looking once you know the environment into which you're moving.

If you do end up having to bookshelf mount, borrow a pair of Totem Dreamcatchers, not a seriuos pair of speakers in the least, in fact thier great fun but they will work on a bookshelf and will give you a reference point for entertainment value, even if the do make a Steinway concert grand  sound like a cheap upright.

I use an old pair of LS3/5As in my study with my SuperUniti and I think it sounds great, albeit it's a bit low on bass. I have another pair which are in my wife's sewing and ironing room. These are on shelves but stood forwards clear of the books in the bookcase and are driven by a Unitilite. They sound completely different but in some ways better than the ones in my study.

best

I have, at a dealer, and it was awful. I was glad when they replaced them with Majik 109s.

I guess the problem is that if you want, and have a £4500 budget for, a decent pair of speakers, they just get bigger as you spend more. So your options feel limited if you want something that does justice to your electronics. Having said that, this is the Naim forum, and it's surely only a matter of time before someone suggests N-Sats on dedicated wall brackets, so it might as well be me  This seems to me like a reasonable compromise between a true bookshelf location and a standmount/floorstander.

Ha - ChrisSU, I'm surprised it took you so long!

Forum friends - please assume that I will buy a place first before changing the speakers (but thanks for making the point...)

Hi Nick,

one of the very few speakers that will actually work on a shelf are the Audiomachina CRM. Mine had go to there to keep them away from the children. They are not ported and suffer no bass boom, even close to a wall. To stay inside your budget you might have to look for used ones, though.

And: they replaced the Martin Logan Ethos as the main speaker in my dealers showroom .

Why not try and get hold of a pair of nSats?  Small.  Sound superb (IMO) on the end of 552/250 (soon to be replaced with a 300DR), and sit quite happily close to the wall.  Alas, you cannot get a new pair any more, and I'm not giving you any of mine!

If you mean literally "on a bookshelf" then you have to ignore any speaker too large, heavy or rear-ported. Even then, anything will sound better on stands.

I would humbly suggest the ATC SCM19 would require quite a shelf! But the SCM7 or 11 are excellent speakers and might be suitable. Or the Linn 109, which would lose little in the way of bass as it doesn't have much in the first place.

No one has mentioned Dynaudio yet? They make some of the best bookshelf speakers out there! In fact they rival a lot of other manufacturer's floor-standing models.

Either wait to audition the New Contour C20 or perhaps try to find a discounted Focus 160. From there also consider a Confidence C1 Platinum. Finally, there is the Excite X18. Perhaps the best speaker they've made is the Special 25 if you can find a mint used example.

Some are smaller - look at Shahinian Arcs. Physically, they're quite small and discreet. Of course, they're not bookshelves, but they'd easily get out of the way near a wall, and if they don't sound best there, they're light enough and unfussy enough to move into the room for more serious listening. They're not cheap though, at £6k (soon to be more with the weak £stg).

NSats are a good call!! I have them presently connected to my CDS3/SN2 and they are phenomenal. God only knows what a 552/500 could do....

Funny you should say that Gary- nSats /552/500 currently in rotation in my room !

Sitting on Kan2 stands atm, so could be improved upon with the n-Stands, but really enjoyable stuff!

ATB,

Mark

Yes Mark, can well imagine they must be immense! I have mine on Kan2 stand too ATM, but i think i've decided it's time to get the wall brackets out and live with them on a more permanent basis.

As it happens I'm considering getting my N-Sats out of the loft and using them instead of my Kudos X2s. Just need to track down a pair of N-Stands, which is easier said than done!
