QNAP RAM?

Posted by: AndyP19 on 16 July 2016

Just about to buy a QNAP TS - 251 (2 bay) into which I am going to put (in one of the bays) a WD 8TB Red. Install Asset. Not interested in RAID so it will be backed up by an 8TB external hard drive.

I have just over 6TB of music! So my question is for a music only streaming server, as detailed, above will 1GB of Ram be enough?

Thanks for any views,

Andy

If a meteor hits your house you can lose both discs.

I fall into the 'its worth it to do Raid 1 for the price of another hdd' camp.  And I use rsync to backup my server nas to another nas, as well as backing up to an external usb hdd.

I have taken no precautions vis a vis a meteor strike.  (In all seriousness, I have in the past brought one usb hdd to my office as protection against a meteor that is not so large as it destroys both my home and my office (4.3 miles from home).)

I am not so worried about a meteor...but a house fire is definitely a possible issue, and I do not have offsite backup, which I should. My portable USB sits in a closet in another part of the house. I guess i could leave it in the (allegedly) fire proof safe.

I bought a Qnap TS251 and put in 8gb of ram straight away. Did I need to? No - but at a cost of  around £30 and 10 minutes work I think it's worth it just in case the music serving only duties evolve into something more demanding. This baby does much more than storage and works very nicely with my tv for video duties. It's pretty much a full featured entertainment pc.
