Why do people dislike naim so much?

Posted by: dazza on 17 July 2016

I have found on different forums that people seem to have a really negetive view of naim but dont understand why. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but it seems that people single out naim more than any other brand. Why is this?

I have no idea. Why don't you ask them?

Don't be so sensitive, every product has its likers and dislikers and Naim are no different.

You have got your answer then Dazza.  Ignorant answers from ignorant individuals.  I never worry about what ignorant people think.  Now intelligent and well informed people, that is a different matter.

I guess most people on here are going to like Naim and not be concerned what other people think!

i think there are some reasons: here in continental europe, naim is a brand of love and hate: it was the ultimate brand in the nineties for music lovers who wanted to show they are not mainstream, but it is not any more; most people i know sold there naim kit or hold there olives.

nahm isn't shiny and the taste of music reproduction has changed; what naims can do, is not what audiophiles like; naim is a little bit "old school" for many.

if you have and show accuphase or mbl, burmester or macintosh you show what you have (and what you paid for); the understatement of naim maybe is not state of the art;

the value for money of the integrated is not state of the art too; there are other brands (croft for example) which have very, very good amps in this price range for less money;

ps.: it is for sure all my opinion and: i love naim , christoph

I attribute it to a form of audiophile penis envy!

I am also sure it is in part because "Naimaholics" engender some of that by refusing to consider anything non-Naim as being worthy of consideration. Look at the Chord Hugo thread by way of a fairly recent example.

It's a hi-fi brand, not a religion.

Naim makes great stuff. So do some other companies. Enjoy the music.

I moved from  Sharp to Rega to Arcam, or Acoustic Reasearch Cambridge as it was known them.    Then I heard Naim, liked it and stayed.   Its well made, sounds good and lasts for years.

Many consider Naim Power supply upgrade as a strategy to rob your money, they think there's  no reason why not to equip them beforehand ,on account of this  they believe they buy half product and since ps aren T that cheap they fear they can T later.this a very stupid fear sa we know

soundwise who hates naim  thinks of its unique prat as a simplified representation of music, tiresome in the long run.

As is some other gear. Maybe its mostly a matter of whether people are more turned on more by the emphasis of parts of the spectrum that carry 'PRaT' information, or by a full even spectrum (all else being equal. Neither is mor right than the other, as it is all a matter of enjoyment and music appreciation.

There used to be quite a lot of anti Naim rhetoric on one particular forum that hosts its own show.  And then one member turned up with his LP12/CDS3/252/300/Neats and pretty much got voted best in show.

More than one hi-FI brand out there!

I did note on a popular HIFI magazine forum there appeared to be quite a lot of Naim bashing, but largely from people who appeared to be intellectually impaired.  I was interested in the SN2, which I did buy eventually, but many topics that featured a mention of the SN2 were quite negative.  I remember some people were keen to point out the Naim amps were overpriced and overated, and there was no way an SN2 could be better than a Rega Elicit R.  Some people seemed to feel particularly strongly about this, despite not having heard an SN2.  However, the magazine in question gives a glowing review and five star rating to just about every hifi product ever manufactured, so it is little wonder that their readers get confused.

Own my 172/200 for over three years now.
Several month ago a good hifi friend, who has switched from U2 to Devialet 400, came to me with one of his 200 and we make a compare.

The Devialet 200 makes some things "better" - or should I say "different"...

Anyway - I had a good offer for a 200, but I stay with my Naim-Kit and I´m still in love with it.

So - don´t care to mutch about what "other" people say or think - If you happy with your Setup (don´t matter if 1 or 10 black boxes...  , it´s all fine!

Now back to the only things that matters - Music...

I think it's maybe jealousy. Naim owners are passionate about their kit and have a long standing commitment to the brand, sometimes in spite of some non trivial frustrations. But it might also be the case that some Naim dealers are arrogant in a sort of "let them eat mains leads" kind of way which upsets people. But it might also be the case that non-Naim dealers, especially the ones that jump from one mediocre brand to another, have to find a way to slag off the competition.

This. With the addition that most people are unaware of the fixed costs of operating a medium sized skilled manufacturing business in the UK.  Many - certainly not all - compare apples and oranges when looking at Naim prices vs "Designed in X, Made in China" or made by a guy in a shed* who may not be VAT liable, may be based somewhere with convenient import/export arrangements, can reverse engineer from Naim kit, may not do this as his sole income etc.

But the PSUs are the big one. Explaining to an average audiophile that the company recommend putting PSUs costing twice as much on their products is as difficult as explaining to the average person how a CD player and speakers can cost more than £200.

Plus R&D - especially with, historically, making everything from source to speakers.

*nothing against them - my system contains a number of shed-built elements I like a lot.  I understand why naim strongly disapprove.

I don't dislike Naim all that much . . . so I dunno.

Posted on: 17 July 2016 by yeti42

There's also the sensitivity to setup. Someone buys secondhand Naim amps, plonks them in their system and finds the sound fatiguing, no cable dressing, steel rack and maybe unsuitable speaker cable, Naim get the blame.

I asked this same question over on another forum and was shocked at some of the replies it was a bit like asking a 4 year old why they don't like broccoli.

To be honest in the part of the world most people have no idea what Naim is.  As far as dislikers of Naim, who cares.

I attended the Wigwam show last year, heard all kinds of music from a huge variety of systems & components, CD, LP, tape, streaming, etc, had a wonderful time, fabulous music, nice people, great day out.

When i got back home to hear music from my naim system i was pleasantly surprised how good it actually sounded and felt very good about owning it.

It's good to have choice
