Unitiqute 2 into Supernait 2 set up.

Posted by: markyu on 22 July 2016

Hi,

I am taking delivery of a new Supernait 2 this afternoon and will be using my Unitiqute 2 as a pure source in the short term.

I'd very much appreciate if someone could give me a simple "idiots guide" to the set up procedure that I need to do between the two boxes, which input to use on the Supernait, Settings that I need to do on the  Unitiqute etc....

I have already purchased a 2 rca to 5 pin din cable.... I think that is the correct lead.

Thanks in advance.

Prob best to start with everything turned off & SN volume right down. I'll assume the SN is connected properly, and the Qute has only a power lead plugged in.

Connect the lead from the UQ preamp out sockets to an input on the SN (I'd have thought any standard input would be fine, but I don't own a SN to check).

Turn things on.

Go into UQ settings and set speakers to 'off'.

Set UQ volume to 84 (and start off with the SN volume right down to avoid and loud surprises). This means the UQ will be putting out a line-level signal.

Set something playing on the Qute (eg an iradio station) and gently turn the SN volume up. Robert should be your father's brother.

Many thanks for the instructions, it's all working perfectly and sounding great.

No worries, and congrats on the new amp. I'm sure you've more treats in store as it runs in as well

Congrats on the SN2 which is a brilliant amp.  I used to run a Qute 2 not mine at one point and it does sound good.  When you have some spare cash I would recommend putting a good dac between the Qute and the SN2 and the quality will rise even further.  Enjoy.

Thanks,

yes I've heard it can take a while. What will change, detail and sound stage?

It varies, but the bottom line is things can go through a slightly rough phase, but then settle down and sound better than ever.

There's loads of posts about it on the forum if you do a search, including some who deny burn in even exists (they're just plain wrong in my experience, but they're entitled to their opinion). But this old post by Darke Bear sums it up nicely:

"It is a standard experience with some Naim kit - first it sounds harsh for a few days, then it can get clearer and then go dull for another few days, then it settles-down and should be ok within a couple of weeks at most.

Leave it switched-on to help the process along. It is mainly down to the Elecrolytic Capacitors changing their response - they are not right for the high frequency handling for a while and you can get harshness.

Woth some combinations it is not a problem at all, but at other times it can be excrutiating!

It took my 500s a good two weeks to sound right, then after a month they sounded wonderful.

DB."

Thanks Dayjay,

I was logically thinking of an NDX when funds allow, would the qute through the naim dac give better results? as that would save a whole wad of cash.

Not something I could answer I'm afraid becuase I haven't compared the two although I'm sure someone on here will have done so.  I have a Hugo on mine and played the Qute through it for a while with good results although my Mac and Audirvana is better.  Worth comparing if your dealer will loan you an NDX and a Naim Dac when you are ready for the next step though

No - it will not.

Quality of the digital 'transport' going into a DAC is of a parmount importance. It's easy to hear what each streamer, acting as a transport, brings to a party.
