NAC N372
Posted by: greekspec2 on 22 July 2016
I was curious if there were any insiders on here that had a hunch if Naim was planning on releasing a new 2 box pre-amp streaming to replace the N272?

I love how this thread is evolving - we have not only devised a non-existent (yet?) product, discussed all its technical specs, bought it, sold it and are at a stage of starting to discuss warranty repairs and whether it's fair to have an extended warranty or not on a mythical unicorn.
2 days to go...
Adam, you really nailed it…
Adam - all we need now are the 372 upgrade and trade in options
But don't forget the later firmware upgrade that will take the 372 to another level. Something in the 472 neighborhood but not enough to supplant your wants for the 572.
To be complemented by a fine bottle of Vintage 2019 ![]()
Nothin left to chance ![]()
ah ah and before you Ask what 302 legacy is expected to be, well there s a 272.2 about to be announced![]()
I certainly wouldn't expect a 472. Naim have never named anything with a 4 (the snaxo 2-4 and 242 don't count) -so Nait 3 went straight to 5. I believe the reason was that the number 4 is unlucky in some countries.
Preamp streamers won T go as far as 372 ,if ever they are into this scheme.
ok I take this :352 unless they revamp 5xx series.
4 and 7 are synonymous with death in Japanese
Actually, I was wrong in my previous post; there was of course the 42. Perhaps it was the 4 series that was avoided, rather than 4 per se.

I guess Boeing don't sell too many 777s, let alone 747s in Japan then? ![]()

Hehehe. Well they certainly haven't had a lot of luck with them if you look at the past couple years of news. They refer to them by the number aliases. 4 (shi) and 7 (shichi) have sound aliases to avoid the "shi" of death so the 747 becomes "Nana-yon-nana".
Some older buildings have no 4th floor allegedly but in 15 years I've never seen that. Like all things, it is silly superstition that is wholly inconsistent from one topic to another.
Didn't Naim have 402 speakers many, many years ago (looked a bit like Mordaunt Shorts of the same era ) ?

Same in China, at least 4, not sure about 7. And I have been in hotels in China where the floor numbering goes from 3 direct to 5, missing out 4. Ditto 14.
in general the Chinese are indeed a very superstitious race, though I don't know if more so than the Japanese - you mustn't stand your chopsticks up in the food in your bowl, as that resembles the incense sticks they burn at graves; no mirror in the bedroom unless hidden from the bed (something to do with spirits)... But the number 8 is lucky in China, also 2 & 5, and I think 8 is in Japan as well, so Naim has some numbering scope to improve oriental sales perhaps...

You've been reading too many Haruki Murakami novels!
Same with BMW, they have only bitten the Asian "4" superstition bullet recently. I suspect the younger Chinese might not be bothered too much but older & more traditional thinking might not be too keen on "4" = "die".
I've not noticed it in Japan but have been in Chinese hotels with no 4th floors & no rooms with a number 4. But its not only an Asian thing as I've been in many US hotels with no floor 13. As it happens I have a 14 reg car & the same house number & as far as I remember I was still showing signs of life this morning.
Well I was talking to a Naim dealer the other day and he said that word from Salisbury the other week was that they regret all this digital stuff and should have developed a turntable all along.

But Chinese customers won't ask for 'no. 4 please', only by the name of the food!

i reckon to emphasize market is so full of this stuff where even good equipment may go unnoticed.
or, alternatively ,they re just becoming aware of having lost somewhat their appeal on account of having sold many of them and not being judged as good as before when serious preamps where purer, less compromised.

The aversion to the number 4 is quite common in Japan also. They often pronounce it "yon" instead of the Sinitic "Shi", which is a homophone for "death" in Japanese as well. Also, you don't buy things in sets of four--it's always five.
Pcd posted:Bet they don't regret the profit made from all this digital stuff.

But in a still young and developing field it takes a lot more effort to try to get ahead, let alone stay there.

My Bad, but you know how I am, when it comes to numbers. Didn't mean to get off topic, but in away, perhaps a sub-topic.
The Ultimate 5 box Wonder! New, or 2nd Hand?
LOL.
