Forums Pet Peeve

Love the new forums, but one thing annoys the piss out of me:  When I reply to a topic I immediately set to follow that topic by force.

This is not bad for threads that don't move fast, but since I live in the US...if I post a reply to a mega-thread before I go to bed...I could wake up with a mailbox with 50 messages in it from all the over night posting.

So now if I post to the "What are you listening to?" thread...I have to remember to unfollow it.  Not that I don't like the thread, but I can't follow it 24/7 or I get flooded.

For the "Joke" thread, and "What is your last vinyl?" thread this is fine...for the "Brexit" thread or "What are you listening to?" thread not so good.

We feel deeply sorry.

Thanks...that means a lot.

Agreed, not following a thread should be the default, but at least you can customise several notification settings, eg not to receive any notifications at all: Control Panel of your profile -> 'Notifications' ->
'Suspend All Email Notifications'.

After the most annoying bugs have been ironed out, the new forums are really nice, especially the usability on iPhone has much improved.

But I like to receive *some* notifications, not 600.  The thing is if you reply to a post you are not currently following, it will set you to follow the post!  Even if you unfollow it every time.

Apparently you've received notification on my reply .

I agree with you, best would be to receive only some notifications, for threads that you actively subscribe to. The 'Follow' box for replies should be unchecked by default IMO.

SITG,

Sign-in, go to your profile and click "Personal Settings". Therein, unclick all boxes under "Default Notification Preferences". See if that works. It does for me.

You could always start your own thread and just call it "WHY might anyone be interested?"

The only notifications I get in my email are if someone "likes" a post I've made.

Same here  - only 'like' notifications. Don't think I've ever followed anything!

Well, if it worked for you I guess I can try it.

This should work - it is what I did

Alright I did it...now I have nothing to complain about though.

Just to be clear, my point was not that your thread would be uninteresting, but rather that it might only contain posts of genuine interest, rather than the endless lists that people insist on posting on the 'what are you listening to' thread. Those are the ones that clog up your inbox with stuff you don't want to read.

Automatically following a thread is typical behaviour for forums

You can change the default options / behaviour though (under personal settings).
