Hi line interconnect

Posted by: Main Naim on 24 July 2016

Hi,

I have a cd5xs and nait xs2. My dealer has loaned me a used hi line interconnect.

Listening so far I am very impressed with the improvement.

Do you think this would be the best upgrade for the price, my dealer will let me have it £300.

Regards..

Try to keep it in the system for as long as possible, without the temptation to keep swapping over. When you have to return it, go back to your (lavender i assume) and see if you still feel the same. It's very easy to be wowed by the extra clarity and bass extesion that the Hiline offers, but you may feel you lose something along the way.

You might get a better response if you post details of your full system (including cabling and rack).

(Just to be clear, I don't mean a better response than Gary's, just a better view of where you are!)

Hi-Line is a tricky one. In my systems it gave me a listening fatigue - tried it twice.

Price offered is very competitive - if you like what the Hi-Line does to your system, you will not find it cheaper.

As it is an ex-demo from your dealer, do check the following:

  • Make sure that none of the rings on the plugs are not broken
  • The cable is not twisted - Hi-Lines if missused can twist rather badly

I'd get a Flatcap XS before a Hiline. I'd also get better speaker leads first.

There's cost and then there's value. It comes down to if you think the cost is justified based on what you can hear. Does it sound £300 better? I'd also look into a power supply for the CDP.

Having used a HiLine with enormous happiness for a while now my slight inclination would be to optmise your boxes first (ie power supplies where you can). Once that's done, my experience was that adding HiLine was a huge upgrade in my (then) ND5/282/250 setup.

HH and I always post differing views on this scenario. I had a CD5x, Hiline, and FCXS in my Nait XS system. I chose to take the FCXS off of the CD5x and use it bare with the Hiline (also tried the lavender in the mix). I'd consider the Hiline indispensable on a CD5x. Just goes to show that a home demo is best, and since you're dealing with a dealer try to get that home demo and determine for yourself. BTW - the asking price on the Hiline seems a very good value if you like it.

At this stage of the game any improvement that costs less than 500 is a bargain.  Another relatively inexpensive upgrade would be quadraspire shelves - you'd probably need 3 levels to make sure everything was high enough to keep the hiline off the ground.
