Cable recommendation - AV -> Preamp (RCA -> DIN)

Posted by: MangoMonkey on 27 July 2016

Need a 8 -10 foot cable to go between an AV receiver and a preamp. RCA -> DIN.

Any recommendations on this?

Anyone tried flashbacksales or mains cables are us? Chord probably too expensive for that length - and I don't want the cable  to be more expensive than the mass market av receiver. :-)

If you get an earth hum through your speakers when you do connect them up, than take a look at that well known on line jungle store and search for a "ground loop isolator".  Mine cost all of about $9 and cut out the hum.

Essentially, it's an isolation transformer that allows the music signal through but isolates the DC and some very low frequency noise.  If your AV receiver & TV system has a floating earth (many do), then it looks to your Naim music system to provide the earth, which is what induces the hum (or something like that!)

Best regards, FT

Used Flashback sales in the past they are good value for money.

+1.

Have a word with Dave. Great personal service and their cables are excellent.

Make it yourself using WBT Phonos, Mogami W2549 cable, a Prehkeytec DIN and some 13mm heat-shrink sleeving.

If DIY (soldering) is a bit "challenging",    I would add RedCo,  Stratford, CT.  to make it for you,  Excellent service & you can spec Mogami 2549 & have a choice of colors.    And the Mogami is one very special cable - I have it all over my system & compared to all others its not beaten,  including nothing worth the cash with the high end Chord's  (yet to try Naim SL)

Mike,

After reading the very positive reports from yourself and Huge, I placed an order for some 2549 earlier this week. My soldering skills aren’t bad, but I’m a bit concerned about the potential difficulty in separating the shield into two and soldering to RCA’s

Still, I’ll have enough cable to perfect my technique, I’ve ordered 20 feet of it.

Hi Fatcat,  dividing the screen is remarkably easy with Mogami 2549 for making a DIN to RCA cable.    Most RCA paired sockets are close together,  typically 1 or 1.5 inch or so (I note you used "foot" measurement) & about double that is all thats needed for the "Y" divide,  or longer if you prefer.

The screen is a spiral wound wire covering & is easily "split" into two - see pictures

I made a DIN to RCA for a friend -  at the RCA end I stripped back about 4 inches, divided the screen in two,   & put each channel + & - pair into a section of insulation tubing.  At the RCA dividing point I fitted a short section of heat shrink to bind the separation point together.  Soldered on the RCA plugs & its done.     Sorry I didn't photo it (unusual for me) but it looked like a 5 ft long DIN cable with a little "Y" section at the other end with RCA's fitted.

Mike.

Thanks for the advice and photos. The screen splits into two a lot easier than I anticipated, every screened cable I’ve used in the past had a braided screen.

The first cable I’ll be making will go from my Naim pre tape out to Heed headphone amp. I’m expecting a huge improvement, the cable I’m using at present cost £3.00 from ebay.

For me, almost, but my home made leads use Eichmann Bullets .. and I prefer the copper variants... Absolutely outstanding and stay securely connected. WBT phono are good, and Naim use them,  but I find they can work slightly loose after a time.  Both have different methods of providing point contacts which is important for phono connections IMO.

Anybody used the Mogami 2549 for signal cable between power supply and power amp.

If so, any recommendation concerning configuration.

One core pos, other core neg. Or, one core pos and screen neg. I’d be running two cables, one to each mono power amp.

Sorry, custom SNAICs are against forum AUP.

Last night I built a 5 pin DIN to RCA, as above instructions. Everything went swimmingly apart from the fact it took me 2 ½ hours and I put the DIN locking ring the wrong way round. But, on the plus side, (as promised) it sounds superb. I can at last hear how good my CanAmp actually is.

Next up is 6ft length to hook up my DVD player to the hifi.

Well done Fatcat! you not only get a superb interconnect with Mogami 2549, but you've got the satisfaction of doing it yourself and you've acquired the skills to make more. My DIN - XLRs, and 552 to S/C, are all 2549. They do take a little while to run in before giving of their best though.
