NS01 help
Posted by: gaboki on 02 August 2016
Recently purchased a 2nd hand ns01. Tried to set it up but the static IP address of previous owner was coming up but not recognised on my network. From faffing around via the IPTool I have managed to remove all the previous settings of the IP, SUBNET MASK, DNS. I now have the IP address set as 0.0.0.0.0; and the DNS, Subnet mask, etc showing as !!not set!! I have tried rebooting, taking out the Ethernet and putting it back - all to no avail. The ns01 server is no longer coming up on the IPTool and the desktop client, nor is it discoverable on my network. I suspect server may have to go to Naim; however on the off chance that something else could be done to rectify this, your advice or feedback highly welcomed. This is my first stab at the whole streaming thing. Currently have the unitiqute 2, using asset upnp and MBP to stream my digital music saved on my MBP. I bought the ns01 to use as my NAS.

Static IP is a bad place if you don't know what you are doing, DHCP is purpose designed to manage IP address allocation & make small home & office systems plug & play. Forget setting IP addresses, set the NS01 to DHCP & then power off. The router (wireless hub) also needs to be DHCP (it manages DHCP) then power that off - wait 5 mins - & power on again, then power on the NS01.

I agree with Mike. Stay with DHCP.
I don't know how you set the NS01 to DHCP, but if you are stuck then the thing to do is to phone the customer support line at Naim and they will explain what you have to do.

Thanks guys; I am going to give it a go; fingers crossed.

Did not work unfortunately; I get the sense that Naim will ask me to send the server to them - especially as they can't access it remotely.

Does NS01 have a default to factory reset facility, if so try that.

I thought as Mike and have been looking through the NS01 handbook but couldn't find a factory reset. There are though all sorts of relevant things in the Naim "network setup user help guide" which is available for download from the NS01 product page. Also I still think it's worth calling Naim support. They won't tell you to send it back if there is anyway to sort it out yourself. If you reboot the NS01, you should make sure it is connected to the network first......

Gaboki,
Can I just clarify: Did you manage to get the IPtool to see the NS01 the second time around (once you had removed all the settings)?
Assuming no - can you plug your computer direct into the NS01? Historically you would have needed a crossover cable but modern network cards just cope with this. Having done so does IPtool find the NS01?

Did you manage to sort your ns01 Mr Underhill, if not what are you using now

I checked with Naim support - no factory reset facility. Also, the IPTool did not find the ns01 the second time. Did plug computer direct to the ns01 & still no joy. I have taken the ns01 to local audio retailer - sending it to Naim to have a look. Valuable, and I am sure costly lesson learnt. Must carry out full due diligence before dabbling into the unfamiliar. Thanks everyone for your advice and help. Much appreciated.

Sorry Gaboki. Hopefully not too expensive a lesson.
Hi Steven, My NS01 is currently home in Salisbury being cosseted. I bought a microRendu as a stop gap, in fact the quality is such that I fully expect to keep it as my main renderer. I will be interested in using the NS01 to serve content in comparison to my Synology.

I've heard a lot of good things about the microrendu. Heard it can be bettered by adding a better power supply. I stupidly sold my NS01 in a moment of madness. Pretty rare now on the second hand market. Will keep looking though. Great bit of kit. As you know. Just does what it's supposed to do.

I've got an SBOOSTER on order.
How were you using the NS01?

You can plug in a VGA monitor, USB keyboard and set it to DHCP that way if the IP tool is not able to see it.

Just as a streamer/server in to a series one supernait. Sold them both and bought a Superuniti. Took a bit of time to get used to the different sound. I don't know wether it got better during its run in or my ears became accustomed to it. But it sound pretty good now

There's a 'reset to default' option in desktop client on my NS01. So... and I haven't tried it... you should be able to access this menu by plugging in a monitor & keyboard as J Saville suggests. However if this one is on its way back to Salisbury further speculation is no longer fruitful... shame, this is just the kind of challenge I enjoy ! My first port of call would have been to reload the software - software CD in the CD drive, cross fingers on both hands, wait for what seems an eternity, etc etc (assuming you have the software CD that came with it).
Luckily, the prognosis is all good - these are excellent devices, Gaboki; you'll love it when you get a working server returned to you and start to discover the ease with which you can access your music collection

Thanks rjstaines; I like a challenge as well but after 2 days non stop trying to finger it out, trying different things, and speaking to Naim support, I did the only thing my family were grateful for; that is, send it away to someone who knows what they are doing to sort it out. Thanks for your advice. I know more now about network and connections than I ever did.

Maybe some ip router is between two channels.

My NS01 is being dropped off this afternoon, apparently it has been thoroughly re-fettled. Interestingly I have always used it as a renderer, as I bought it before Naim produced their 'streamers'. As I am now using a microRendu I am doing to:
1. Use it direct into my Bel Canto and compare it to the mR; and
2. Use it as a upnp source for the mR and compare it to my Synology.
