What BluRay Have You Just Watched?

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 11 July 2011

Why bother with a new thread?

Often I will buy the DVD rather than the BR, but sometimes the difference is more than just a minor improvement in picture quality.

I bought the BR of El Cid. This is a great film, but one with a truly sub-standard 4:3 DVD. The BluRay is so much better.

If, like me, you love this film then it well worth the money with a 2.35:1 print and 5.1 DTS-HD soundtrack.

I haven't got to the 2nd disc of extras, but these are never of that much consequence to me - it is the Main feature that counts, and this is so much better than the DVD.

I've got this on my list for Love Film. You're tempting me to buy it.

It's been a while since I had last seen The hunt for Red October. It has aged well, and the transfer to blu-ray is very good.

Cheers,

Saw it yesterday for the first time in its entirety. Not bad at all - while I'm not sure I buy Mater/Larry the cable guy as suitable lead (his newly found technical expertise seems out of character), I tend to agree with my sons that Finn/Michael Caine must be the coolest car to ever grace a cartoon.

Watched Cars 2 last night and was pleasantly entertained.  The visuals were incredible showing how far Pixar have come in their expertise.  Not entirely sure that Eddie Izzard's voice quite worked as that of a posh Range Rover.

The disc started to play up about scene 23 with loss of sound, then static images.  I checked the disc on my other blu-ray player and the same fault turned up at the same place. Both blu-ray players are brand new and have the latest updates installed.  This is the 3rd blu-ray that I have had from LoveFilm with playback issues. I wonder if they are having copying problems.

Had some extra time off over Christmass and New Years,so i watched the complete Lord of the Rings trilogy that i recently purchased, incredible detail and the few changes that they made to the original Theatre release were blended in quite nicely.

Are these rentals ? Did you look at the BR surface, I get a lot of CDs from the library, some people don't seem to know how to look after other peoples property.

Hi Big H,

The are rentals from Love Film.  I did check the surface of the discs and they weren't too bad.  Perhaps it is the case that Blu-ray players as a whole are a little less forgiving of marks on Blu-ray discs than DVDs. I have had loads of DVDs from Love Film and have never had a play back problem.

Copying problems? They send you a home-grown copy?

Just got Star Wars -The Complete Saga for my B/Day so shall be watching over the coming weeks.

The Dark Knight Rises

Saw this at the cinema twice, and both times had issues following what the hell Bane was saying.

BluRay via Oppo into AV2 (VI) and all becomes clear.

Great picture and soundtrack, and a good movie.

We bought that about a year ago. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the saga hung together when watched in story order. I didn't even mind episodes I, II and III as much as I thought I would. The cleaning up and enhancements of the original trilogy is well done and makes eveything match better. I'm no purist, so not offended by tampering with the classics. But Han shot first.

Update: I see I'm responding to an old post. How was it?

+1

Watched it last night - I did not realise there was an issue with the speech but you are not the only one to comment on such.  No problems on my system

Watched Saving Private Ryan on Sunday - Xmas present of BluRay to replace my DVD version.  One of my favourite movies. What impressed me more than the increased definition of the picture was the much better quality of the sound track through DTS.  Dialogue must easier to follow throughout the movie. And the Normandy invasion scene, which has always been impressive on my nVI/5.1 focal dome system, came over with less boom and better distinction between all the different sound effects.  Good stuff.

Alien series on BR next in the queue.

The Scottish islands filmed in gorgeous black and white back in the 1930s by the great Michael Powell.

Fantastic film - and I speak as someone who has zero interest in F1. What a driver.

Star Trek Next Generation Season 3

Well, this is WELL worth the price of the Blu-Ray. The colour saturation is first rate, and makes the DVDs look pale in comparison. The depth of the primary colours is surprising, and the detail.

Would I re-buy the box sets i already own ....surprisingly, I am tempted!.
