What BluRay Have You Just Watched?

Posted by: Mr Underhill on 11 July 2011

Why bother with a new thread?

Often I will buy the DVD rather than the BR, but sometimes the difference is more than just a minor improvement in picture quality.

I bought the BR of El Cid. This is a great film, but one with a truly sub-standard 4:3 DVD. The BluRay is so much better.

If, like me, you love this film then it well worth the money with a 2.35:1 print and 5.1 DTS-HD soundtrack.

I haven't got to the 2nd disc of extras, but these are never of that much consequence to me - it is the Main feature that counts, and this is so much better than the DVD.

Started watching this when the it was on BBC2 a while back but Sky stepped in after a season or two. Real shame as i was really getting into it. Might have to investigate that same box set. Was series 5 the last one or are there more planned?

Series 6 finished back in May, Rackkit, and will be on Blu-ray next month. Series 7, which I believe airs in March 2014, will be the last.

In 5.1 DTS.

Have had this for quite a while and it's taken the purchase of the Japanese produced CDs of the Led Zep albums to inspire me to slot this Bluray into my HT system.  Enjoyable but can't say the sound quality has impressed.  The bass seems over-blown to me.   Nice to see and hear some of these classic songs. It must have been wonderful to have been at the concert itself.

A friend lent this to me. Well made and the tension is terrific. Thoroughly recommended.

Half decent films but neither are classics. 3.5/5 for both.

Saw Elysium at the cinema and was thoroughly under-whelmed. Would agree with the 3.5 but I had hoped for SO much more.

It just never really got going did it? Matt Damon is a great actor but I don't think this film & director gave him anything to really work with. Shame really, a wasted opportunity for the director & now doubt a tonne of cash in making it.

Am watching this right now (The Grateful Dead Movie) - as a bit of a Deadhead, I'm surprised I never got round to seeing it until today.

It takes about 20 minutes to get going, but after that it flies! Huge fun, two and a half hours of prime Dead from the Wall of Sound era (October '74) with Jerry absolutely on fire. Lots of great backstage/audience stuff, and you see them setting up the Wall of Sound. For those who don't know, the WoS was the Dead's infamous sound system. A bit of a beast (see below):

Possibly slightly biased as I love Iceland so much, but offset because I normally find Ben Stiller tiring to watch, but this was outstanding:

Really enjoyed this, but I'm not really sure what The Hedge bought to the party - he's all effects...

Must agree. The old and new of Page and White would have been much more interesting without that semi-talented interloper. I'm not totally anti-Edge, but he's just not in the same league as the other two.
