dbpoweramp question

Posted by: Rich27 on 16 July 2011

My main computer is an iMac and have been using iTunes to rip my cd's to my synology nas which in turn serves my NDX using the synology standard upnp server.

I have been playing around with dbpoweramp on a very old windows xp laptop that we have sitting around and I like the fuunctionality and also enjoy the ability to stream the flac files ripped via asset.  This seems to me to have a better sound quality than aiff streamed from the synology and also the functionality of asset seems to integrate much better with the NDX and nServe.

Anyway the laptop is on it's last legs so my question is would a relatively inexpensive netbook from the likes of Samsung say, with an external optical drive, serve as a decent ripping device (for dbpoweramp) and a server on my network for flac files on the nas served up using asset.  I don't want to spend a lot of money here as I am commited to the mac for all other computing needs.  It does seem however that all the best rippers and upnp servers are designed to work in a windows environment.

Hi Rich,

Yes there should be no problem, ripping and uPNP streaming is not very taxing for modern CPUs even when transcodng. If you rip a CD and comes up valid in Accurip with dBPweramp you are fine - also of course make sure youre old netbook has at least 100Mbps ethernet port for connecting to the LAN.
