Internet radio streamer only - help

Posted by: matpip on 17 July 2011

Dear forum,

I want to offer to my parents a device to listen internet radio. Such device will be connected to an Arcam Mini Solo, and can be connected to internet via ethernet cable. I prefer not having any link with PCs, just to keep it simple...sound quality is not a major objective, and I would like to spend less then 300 euros.

My initial idea was a Squeezebox Touch, but I'm not sure it can work without the dedicated software installed on a pc/mac, does it?

Please let me know, cheers

A cheap simple to use Internet radio is the Pure Evoke Flow one. Ok it needs wireless LAN as it doesn't have an Ethernet connection, but is incredibly versatile. It plays FM, DAB, uPNP and Internet radio.
It has audio line out or can power an additional speaker for stereo.
I wouldn't  call it serious hifi but it depends what is wanted and is very respectable and ideal for kitchen, breakfast table etc, and it's one small box. It also has batteries so you can take outside to the patio etc.

matpip,

Simon's suggestion is a very good one. Alternatively, I think a SQ can be used without its software on the PC if it's only to receive internet radio.

I have a very simple Pinnacle Sounbridge HomeMusic that works well in UPnP but only has a minijack stereo output. Another good Internet radio device is the Revo WiFi Blik but I fear it's discontinued.

Cheers,

Massimo

Thanks Simon, but the ethernet access only is mandatory in my case...

I just checked on the slimdevices forum, and actually yes, it looks like the SB Touch has an internal Squeezebox Server pre-charged, so it can be used as standalone streamer (meaning no need for a PC), provided it is connected to the net via ethernet to access the radio.

I was just wondering if a) that's really the case (meaning my understanding of the SB Touch functionality is correct) and b) if there is any valuable alternative out there...

As I said, it will be connected to an hifi system, so no need to have it's own speaker/s.

Max, i'll check the Revo...
