Synology NAS, help needed in reseting the admin password

Posted by: kiba on 10 August 2016

Can anyone help me with a basic step by step guide in resetting the pasword on a Synology  NAS to admin/blank, including the pitfalls (like reestablishing The ip adress).  Have read the Synology forum, but still not seen any clear guidlines, but a lot of confusions. Have had good help from Naim forum before, so my best hope here

I tried to logon to my synology NAS, but the usual admin with empty password is not working any more. I use auto update, and have just read that a synology update has removed this "option".

I have a minimum of network knowledge, and would like to be prepared, before  just jumping into "hit the reset bottum".

I use my NAS with 272+555, 300 and US,  but had set it up a long time ago

Why not use the built in password reset function ..

Hi, i know, press nas reset buttom, but what about my network settings, according to synology,     The ip adrees will be default, how can i establish this one again, and are tjere other pitfalls ?

I've never heard of this problem & wonder what did you do to prevent it working as it was before,  A reset & start again is the best way forward.

Press the reset button on the NAS until you hear the beep sound.    Then start over as a new install.   Password will be default "blank",  reset guest account to disabled & set yourself as administrator & then (please) set your own password.

Next advice is don't mess around with IP addresses,  if you get it wrong (& thats easy to do) its a bad place to be & I suspect that might be something thats got you in your password problem.    Please reset all your system to DHCP,  the wireless hub/router is the DHCP manager & it is a real expert at correctly setting up your network:  Set every component on the system to DHCP first ,  then switch the whole system off, leave it off for 5 minutes & then switch on in sequence;   router first & let it complete its startup process,  then start NAS & after its completed the 272 & then whatever else makes up the system.

Again.

When you try logging onto the NAS you get the USER/PASSWORD screen that has a "I Forgot my password" option. Have you tried that?

I don't think that you need to reset your NAS.

Hi, thanks for your answer.

The situation root cause is, that I did not create an admin password in the first place, I left it blank as left by synology. But an update 5.2-5644,  20151117, by synology, do not allow this any longer. As i run auto update, I was locked out by synology.  I know of the reset button, but reading in the synology forum, there are different not so good experinces. i have not changed any default settings to my knowledge, so yes it's maybe not so complicated, I can press reset, and hope that every thing works  (read US can see NAS) and then I can log into the NAS with admin/ blank, and after this make a admin pasword of my own

Not to be too picky . . . BUT . . . the obvious solution was to do that reset button process.  Only frustrating if you do a lot of hand-wringing.  Sure, there somewhere online is someone having posted, "I pushed that reset button and my nas exploded and burnt down my home," but one must filter such posts with a little common sense.

I'm going to search for that post!
