ns01 semi dead

Posted by: Claus-Thoegersen on 20 August 2016

Today my ns01 stopped working after it had ripped a cd, restart did not help. The same happend 2 weeks ago at night. I guess the main disk inside is about to give up, and the failed rip from today confirms that. I have a Bluesound v1, so a fine backup that can also play my highres albums, but nothing comes close to using the DTc to control my music. It is a 5 year old server, so I am not sure if another trip to main base is worth it. Like the first time I managed to get the ns01 back to life after a few hours rest, the ripped cd is not available,   so I think ripping will be done on the pc in the future, to prolong the life or time until a trip to UK.

BIOS battery is probably in need of a  change. If this isn't the cause of your issues it's going to be bad  sector(s) and if the boot sector is bad it's time for some TLC.   All fixable

It's probably worth a reasonable amount of money if it's working, but not much if it isn't, so worth keeping that in mind, especially if you can get it repaired locally (as you aren't in the UK).

Despite my anger at Naim failing to invest in the platform, personally I would get it fixed. They are excellent machines.

I thought a faling battery would make booting impossible, and make the time go off. Last backup and other messages I have seen has the correct time.

Unfortunately no local repairs, all units go back to Naim.

Everything works fine again, but I will have to power down in a few days unfortunately.

how is naim supposed to "invest in the platform"? How didnt it?

Initially it did. They added internet radio, flac and mp3 encoding, an iOS app and a Mac based desktop client. But the last significant firmware update was in 2013 and since then they have failed to incorporate BBC HLS radio streams, support for any kind of streaming service and there are still operational bugs that surface from time to time. I accept that some of this is more relevant to HDX and Naimnet users than for those who use their devices purely as servers but still, these devices were (and are) not cheap and I think Naim could (and should) have done more to support their customers in these respects.

I can live with the fact or what seems to be the fact that development on a Windows XP platform has stopped, but I would be unhappy if I was a new HDX owner and was hoping for updates.

It does what it says it will do. Gaining extra capabilities over time is always a nice thing, but it is certainly not a given. Wanting updates is one thing, wanting upgrades is quite another.

So we need a definition of what is an update and what is an upgrade. Digital servers and streamers evolve over time. If you buy a cheap unit it is not a problem if it is not being developped more, you can just buy a new device with the latest features, but hdx are not cheap, and if new features are not or cannot be added the SH value goes down very quick.

I would not buy an HDX today because it set of features is not what you expect from a 2016 streamer/server. Naim's streamers even much cheaper models confirms that.

Well, it's only my opinion but I would say that something like BBC HLS streams and squashing bugs are updates and should be free, whereas Spotify and Tidal are upgrades and potentially chargeable.

But, in recent times Naim have done and offered us neither.

Nor have they provided an adequate explanation as to why.
