The Tragically Hip

I just want to thank The Tragically Hip for the soundtrack to my life. A truly Canadian rock band. Perhaps their final concert was broadcast last night to an emotional nation. Their frontman Gord Downie has terminal brain cancer.

Towns across the nation setup big screens in public parks for those that couldn't be in Kingston Ontario to watch the concert live. Millions of Canadians watched. It's hard to put in words; its amazing that the power of a rock band united a nation last night.

Stayed up to watch. Been a fan since I saw them in Vancouver in the early 90's whilst visiting friends.

I'm amazed and somewhat ashamed to confess that I've never heard of what appears to be a massive and influential band. My bad.

Like Tom, I have no knowledge of this band, strange as I seem to have a lot of Canadian acts in my life.

Lets see how much help Tidal can be to rectify this oversight.

Up to Here, Fully Completely, and +1 for Road Apple's.

When I first heard the album "Up to Here" I was floored. Google "Boots or Hearts" "New Orleans is Sinking" "38 Years Old". On Road Apple's check out " Little Bones". Some of my other favorite tracks include "Grace, Too" , "Long Time Running". They never really achieved international stardom but I think they were OK with that.

It's hard to pin them down to a certain style or genre. They can sing a poignant song about hockey mythology and then write a song about a wrongfully convicted killer. They weave in places in Canada in many of their songs. Gord Downie is a brilliant if sometimes eccentric lyricist; "It was in Bobcaygeon, I saw the constellations reveal themselves, one star at time". (Bobcaygeon Ontario).

Brave man taking the band for one final trip on the road. I was at Pearl Jam last night @Wrigley Field and Eddie Vedder spoke of him and their friendship. A number of folks had Canadian flags... Very sad, cancer is a terrible curse.
