Have you ever heard a recording studio?

Surely no hifi can match this.  Anyone had this experience and what was it like?

Then you are also familiar with that...special sound...with studio monitors..or floor monitors...the " real deal"

Very much so... Nothing sounds like a Mesa Boogie amp cranked up 3 meters away from you

For gigs I'm starting to use in-ear monitors via AKG wireless unit. Feels a bit disorientating to begin with - spatial recognition is all messed up when I move.  Takes some getting used to... Before my mate's guitar has always been to my left when I had drums behind to my right. Now that I move around, the sound is constantly in the same place, but that does not match the visual any longer

I envoy that Mesa cranked...the real deal . I know...I'm maybe  stepping toes here and maybe political incorrect...but this unheard..before buying new Exposure takes me back to certain things...it's just fantastic. If you want to hear that.."raw studio" sound...it's the best I ever heard in my home and...please...don't flame me...I love Naim...it's just about how brands presenting the music....nothing right or wrong here.....up to the listener. Just gone from Olive 72  Hicap 140 to my new toy. It's really amazing... for what it does...for ME....even after only 3 hours in use

Cheers

In and out of Valhalla State of the art recording studios and have to say the home system is vastly superior! However, original master recordings are the best source if done to the best.

"People just Do nothing" - BBC2, earlier this evening. The guys, were in a real recording studio this time, anyone seen it? . I like the ATC comments above.  ATC have huge respect among the pro's. I seem to remember Naim doing quite a bit a bit too, in the early days.

Fact is, our beloved music is recorded, it has little to do with "musical" hi-fiequipment. It's a product, and It's the musicians with their instruments, and the recording engineers who make the sound. They mainly use pro studio monitors, to mix and master the tracks. Some of them choose ATC.

With pro monitor manufacturers, like ATC and PMC, (other pro monitors are available) now making speakers for the consumer market, why not give them a listen.

I've listened in to music in 2 pro studios, the replay in both was loud, musical and very satisfying overall.

+1 on that!

I'm guessing that what is heard during live recording in a studio is far removed these days from what actually makes it onto the master tape after overdubs/sampling/mixing/compression and other post recording processing.

I would imagine also that there is a lot of studio time spent on setting up (micing instruments and amps etc.) to get "just the right snare drum/guitar etc. sound"

Perhaps that's why some of the versions on the Live Albums praised in the Music Room thread sound so much more exciting and "real" than their studio counterparts.

You'd be amazed especially the amount of processing that has to be done on a vocal track. And I'm not talking about the pitch correction

Recording is an imperfect sience, so it's more of 'how do I make it sound like a real thing and correct for the recording technology'.

Consciousmess - you must be a very curious person since  you ask all these Strange questions - you surely keep the forum busy.

It's just a shame that our friend doesn't seem to have anything to contribute to the discussion.

You may well be right, Adam. We'll know for sure if he starts a new post with "How long is a piece of string?"

Welll... Originating posts seems to be valued higher by the algorythm, than replying to posts with advice. By replying now to this thread we are building OP's community ranking

Aren't we getting a bit cynical and personal? We all have the opportunity not to comment. Including Norse gods!

I'm frequently in recording studios, recording things. This year has included Abbey Road Studio 1 (the big studio), and Air Studios in north london. Both times recording Academy of St Martin with Sir Neville Marriner. Plus other places. Huge fun.

I usually set up the Soundfield mic to record B format (width, height, depth and omni) which which I can post process any speaker arrangment, a pair of Schoeps omnis and a Royer SF24 stereo ribbon fig-8 mic. All into my Sound Devices 788T SSD recorder.

Thats alongside my v good friend Tony Faulkner (in pic) who is doing the main commercial recording using his legendary Faulkner array of mics (vintage M50s etc, including some prototype new M50TF (for "Tony Faulkner") about to be made by Rode). He normally records to Sadie: here at Air it went to Protools I think.

Uh, active DBLs with 3x500s was better than any live concert I've ever heard (which is in the 1000s).

As a non musician, fascinating thread.

I was in a studio once a long time ago with my mates band, but had no idea what the engineer was doing. Despite my mates punk band not being that great, the sound coming out of the studio monitors was great.

But in hindsight, nothing like I listen to through my home system.

So many knobs and buttons in the studio.....!

To my mind, this makes absolutely no sense - like saying a photograph of the Mona Lisa was better than seeing it in person.

Not that a concert can't have horrible sound (which I have also experienced) but there are enough good live sound renditions that saying any system is "better" than real, live music makes me wonder about such a statement.
