Linking Mu-so and Qb

Posted by: PatC on 24 August 2016

I have a Mu-so and I'm about to get a Qb for the same room, mainly so the sound isn't just coming from one place but also because the Qb looks so nice. Both will be connected via AirPort Express and Ethernet to avoid the wireless dropouts. Source will be a MacBook and iTunes

Would I stream using AirPlay to one Mu-so and sync it to the other one using the Naim app? Or use ITunes and AirPlay to stream to both devices? And if  the latter do I still need to sync the two devices?

I've read much about AirPlay dropouts here but nothing that answered my question. Thanks for any advice.

One device has to be the master, so option 2 won't work. As for option 1 I'm not sure, as some sources will not work as multi room.

Overall I'd suggest that it's a bad idea, and that you'd be better with a Qute and some speakers if you want a more expansive sound.

Unfortunately, Airplay does not work in Multiroom mode, so you're out of luck there as well. Airplay from a Mac allows streaming to multiple devices, so it's possible that this would work, but not from an iPhone.

Regardless of all this, I agree with HH, a Unitiqute and a small pair of speakers would be my choice.

Muso will act as Airplay targets; at that point you're outside any syncing that Naim provide and subject to the Airplay sync capabilities.

Check the Muso support for other multiroom options. May need to pay attention to what capabilities a Mu-so only environment can multiroom, if Naim sync is to be evaluated.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I asked as I would have assumed Multiroom worked with any input. I'm not sure I want to risk streaming to two devices via AirPlay in case the sync is off between the two.

"I'm not sure I want to risk streaming to two devices via AirPlay in case the sync is off between the two."

Well, hopefully the space/time continuum will not be drastically affected and you will not be sucked into a wormhole. No offence intended

It sounds like you have good scenarios to test, if you are indeed getting a Qb to match the Muso, so why not try it out and see what does work? My own experience using Airplay was that the syncing did seem to mistime, but I didn't spend enough time diagnosing the root cause; I switched to Sonos soon after and without issue.

Muso-only multiroom: would be useful to understand true capabilities. Is it really only iRadio, for example? It's not clear that you can, for example, define one Muso a master for UPnP of local music sources. The manual suggests not and that you need a Naim streamer for such purposes.

Happy listening.

Sell both and get sonos as you can do what your looking to do with them. Play 5

The Sonos may have been a better option but I have the Muso now. I won't bother getting the Qb now as the Multiroom function doesn't seem to work as I had hoped.

These comments seem confusing. I would phone Naim customer support, not least because they are discounting a Muso and a QB bought together. On Muso support it says the following which seems to imply that if you set the Muso as the master and stream music to it via Airplay then it will pass the stream on to the QB.

Clive

  • Mu-so multiroom works over a standard home network, either via a wired or Wi-Fi connection. Simply select a single Mu-so as the multiroom master using the naim app for iOS or Android devices , to stream music to other Mu-so wireless music systems in up to four additional rooms in perfect sync.

That does suggest it should work but isn't specific about the inputs Multiroom will work with, and there are contradictory views regarding AirPlay. Calling Customer Support is probably the best way forward.

Patc,

Do let us know the definitive on multi room with Muso only systems when you hear back or test. The manual appears to lag the online info and assumes integrating with a Naim streamer.

Patc - did you get an answer to this from Naim?

Hey one and all I run multiroom with these devices (muso & qb). From memory you can have up to 5 slaves. Im in the middle of building a house so have gone through a few discussions with the local seller (Im in Queenland/Aus). Multiroom works on all native services, so i stream multiroom from Upnp, Tidal and Radio mostly. Havent tried tv but dont see the point. Sink is great.  I wont right war and piece but flick me any more questions and I will try to anwser best I can. We use the qb as our bedroom master source, its great to wake to. Multiroom has really changed the way our family consumes music with Tidal.......
