Hi-Caps - Supercap

Posted by: al9315 on 25 August 2016

Hi

I have read all I can on here re: Hi-Caps / Supercap - I have NAC82 + 2 x Hi-Cap + 2 x NAP135

I am thinking of:-

Replacing Hi-Caps with a 2nd hand Supercap - will I definitely notice a SQ difference (improvemnet!) ?

Will any Supercap model work with NAP82 ?

Having 2 x NAP 135 serviced - will I definitely .......................... ?

Getting a bit older so would just like to get these jobs done before I cannot be bothered

Nowadays mainly listening via NDX/XPS2 ......

Thanks

Al

Yes to all 3.

Best VFM would (for me) be the hicaps to olive supercap, but all three worth the effort if you are happy with the outlay.

I put a  Supercap2 onto a 2002 82. This was from a single Highcap2. The difference was stunning. It was as if the 82 had been half asleep. I think you will really discover what a fanastic amp you have in your 82 putting a Supercap on the end of it. Will you have the opportunity to listen before you buy!

Service and POTS8 upgrade for an 82?  Definitely worthwhile if not done in the last 10+ years

2 hicaps to a serviced olive supercap?  Absolutely yes.

Service 135s if not serviced in the last 8 years?  Absolutely yes.

In isolation, all are highly recommended.  If you have to prioritise, then I would do the supercap first, then whichever of the 135 or 82 seems more in need of a service.

I recommend this on the basis of having both a 52/SC/135 and 82/SC/250 in the family.

If Naim factory servicing is above your budget, try class A in Sheffield - it is a Naim authorised service agent

Thank you all for your replies - very much appreciated - and about what I thought myself

I will probably not have a chance to listen to a Supercap - but am quite happy to "go for it"

I am also thinking of changing my loudspeakers - much trickier - I feel the system could produce a bigger sound (not necessarily louder) with more modern / capable loudspeakers - maybe around the 2K mark ?!

I do not wish to buy 20+ year old e.g. SBLs (much as I did like them years ago when I heard them)

I will either be looking for recent or new - not sure how far my amplification will stretch ? - seems quite a few people one here have quite expensive speakers with reasonably modest amplification ?!

e.g. I did like Dynaudio dem at Bristol show - consider perhaps Naim Ovators 400 - would have to hear first !

My biggest problem ( as everyones) not unlimited space - so speakers would need to be within 8-10" of back wall.....

Any ideas to consider are most welcome

Regards,

Al

I can recommend Ovators-400. They are designed for free-standing positions, but since there is no bass reflex they are quite ok with being relatively close to the back wall.

Otherwise some offering from Kudos? Remarkably low-key looking speakers and modest in size. But absolutely wonderful to listen to. Heard Kudos Super20s powered by a 15-year old unserviced Olive setup recently. Wow!!!!

I'd keep a lookout for some SL2s. They are truly wonderful speakers. And as to the Supercap, go for it.

Thank you so much Adam + HH

Appreciate the help

HH:   Re: SL2s - I am sure they are tough to find nowadays ?! ( HH - yours look fab !!!! )

Adam:   You were so right a few months ago - I now have XPS2 added to NDX - what a difference ( got it at a really good price too !)
