Another Asset QNAP Help Question

Posted by: AndyP19 on 26 August 2016

I've been doing a bit of sorting out since I got my QNAP (loaded with Asset) a few weeks ago.

Just split out 12 Average White Band albums which where across 4 CD compiltaions (the 3 albums on 1 or 2 CD package). So I put all the tracks in separate album folders downloaded the respective artwork and re-ran asset. After a while the artwork showed up but 'Average White Band' is sitting on the Naim app via Asset under 'The Average White Band' now at some stage one of the multi-Cd packages may have had a reference to 'The' but I've:-

- Put all the folder albums under a folder called 'Average White Band'

- Deleted all reference to 'The' and renamed the band to 'Average White Band' for each track i.e. '09 Average White Band - A Star in the Ghetto.flac'

- Done the same in Edit ID tag for all the albums and blitzed any reference to 'The' under the name of the band in Artist and Album Artist

- Rescanned Asset detecting changes

- Rescanned All in Asset

- Restarted Asset

Despite all of the above (done multiple times) when I launch the Naim app go to UPnP launch Asset check under Artist 'A' there is no Average White band check under 'T' and there they are listed under 'The Average White Band' but 'The' has been purged it is no more, it is gone so why?

Going in under each individual album greyed out under the album name is the band name 'Average White Band'

What am I missing - there is no 'The' now - something simple I guess!

Phew it's driving me mad.

Thanks as always,

Andy

Are there any Search variants of the artist / album artist that might still have 'The' in?

In the Asset configuration page, set the 'The' album and artist handling as shown in the screen shot below. There is then no need to remove 'The' from anything. It will then show up in the Naim app as Clash, The etc.

I'd suggest that you set Asset on your iPad screen - do this by going into the Qnap on the iPad, then go to Asset, then save the page to the home screen. That makes it really easy to get to.

Did a Search on 'The Average' and I get matches like  Average White Band - Cut The Cake but no 'The Average....'

See above...

Thanks HH, that has certainly produced a solution and they are now in 'A' but interestingly where as 'The Rolling Stones' previously under 'T' are now under 'R' as 'Rolling Stones, The'   the band in question are now under 'A' but just as 'Average White Band' not as you would expect 'Average White Band, The'

Very curious.

It'll be because you removed 'The' from the artist tag when you edited the files. If you had left the tags as they were originally, you would get Average White Band, The.

Indeed.  No server will add back data that the user deleted.

Sorry guys humour me for a while whilst I make a fool of myself. So before making the configuration change to 'The' for all bands. If I originally I deleted 'The' why was the band still firmly lodged in the main Artist A-Z menu under 'T' as 'The Average White Band' and not moved to 'A' 'Average White Band'

What if it was a band was called 'A Certain Ratio' and for some reason I deleted 'A' to get 'Certain Ratio' making all the file changes ID-tag etc and rescan wouldn't it move from 'A' to 'C'.

Just can't see the logic here as to why when I delete 'The' the band still stays in 'T' and not moved to 'A'?

I wouldn't worry about it. You must have missed something when you retagged. I use DBpoweramp which is made by Illustrate, who also make Asset, and it might be an idea to use that going forward.

You can change the artist to anything you like. Asset will simply present what you have. If you change A Certain Ratio (a fine band - I particularly like Sextet) to Certain Ratio the artist will appear under C. Call them Spud if you like, and they will move to S.

The other thing is that you may have changed Artist but not Album Artist. The main lesson here is that getting the tagging right is crucial to making everything easy to use. When I download anything, or rip it, I ensure that the tagging for Artist, Album Artist, Album Title and Genre are correct before moving the albums to the Qnap.

Tidy metadata is happy metadata.

[@mention:32118649575894026] ... did the original tags have an "ArtistSort" tag at all? That could explain the strange order. Also AlbumArtist and AlbumArtistSort could affect the order shown.

Eloise & HH, thanks but no I didn't have the "ArtistSort" tag. Just "Artist" and "Album Artist" that I can see which would influence the order of the Artist and both fields were amended to delete 'The'.

Just done a complete reboot of the router, QNAP and NDS which seems to sorted out a few other issues - I'll need to reverse the 'The' configuration in Asset to see if that was the maybe the problem.

I think this was one of the first batch of rips I did and you're right HH I am now meticulous with metadata and artwork. Thanks again.

This is what I was thinking too.  You need to use a tagging program that displays them ALL, otherwise you can end up in exactly this place - wondering why why why . . .
