Phono cards

Posted by: Sister E. on 28 August 2016

Hi,

Currently running Olive 62/140(serviced) with CD2 into Royd Minstrels.

Phono cards removed.

Thinking of adding a turntable.

How much of a power drain of restoring either the MM/MC cards(i possess both) affect the performance of the 62?

Thanks,

Sister xx

Sister, have you considered adding a Hicap? Even with the phono boards onboard you should have a nice improvement all round on all sources.

Thanks Richard,

Actually I do have an olive hi-cap. It needs a service.

I was hoping not to have to use it as I have one shelf left on the hi-fi rack for the TT which means I would have nowhere to put the hicap. It's all very tight in my small London flat. If push comes to shove I will have to find a place for the Hicap but don't want to buy another rack.I'm using a 4 tier Clearlight Aspeckt shelf. Not everyone's favourite on here but i think it's pretty good.

My recollection is that it still sounds good with the boards in. If there's a drop in quality it's pretty minor. At least that's my recollection!

Most important avoid those nasty phono/BNC connectors

Difficult to avoid them on the phono board inputs since that's all there is on the back. If memory serves, the 62 has BNCs which are MUCH better than RCAs. Either way, impossible to avoid if using the boards.

Oh sod it, I forgot about the BNCs...might just plonk it (the turntable that is)on the Nait2 in the bedroom and be done with it,

Check the back of the preamp! I could be wrong, it might have RCAs, in which case it'd be a piece of cake to plug in the deck.

You could make a support shelf that bridges one of your boxes. It would fit into the higher shelf of the Aspect.

That's OK, rather than use adaptors, just take the tonearm cable into your friendly dealer and ask them to replace the RCA phonos with some nice 50ohm BNCs.  The BNCs themselves are very inexpensive compared to many RCA plugs so you're just looking at about 20 minutes labour.

Thanks for that everyone. Some great ideas about BNCs and extra shelves for the Aspect....I may try the TT(a friend is selling me an old Roksan Xerxes without plinth sag) on the Nait and Royd Edens and see how it sounds.

You could just use BNC adaptors. I did that for years since I didn't want to change (and possibly make worse) the terminations on my deck. Sounded great.
