Naim 272 250DR XPS DR vs 125k of superlative separates -

Posted by: redalphabet on 29 August 2016

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of system shopping. The Nagra HD dac $30k into a solution 530 amplifier $55k and the new Magico s5 MK2 speakers $38k a pair. I listened to some classical, vocal, jazz, dance ALT J, James Blake, etc etc.

The room was very well treated and everything was racked - cables were analysis plus oval 8's

The streamer was the Aurender N10 8k

The highs were so sweet and delicate. The music hung in the air effortlessly before me - the Nagra HD dac has extremely good bass and image height - its focuses the soundstage rather than widens it to compared let's say the MSB Dac 5. When I played Jazz and Memphis blues my partner - also in the dem, I could tell looked, a bit flat. Same so with the dance music listed above -  I noticed in the rack the 272, 250DR and the XPS DR and promptly asked the dealer to put in NACA 5 and play the Naim system through the Magicos

AND BLOW ME DOWN!

NAIM DOES IT AGAIN!

It's perhaps time  - owners of the Nac 52 and Nap 135's start looking around and shopping. Naim may have finally succeeded in producing the classic sound at a classic price.

Would it have sounded even better with the 300DR and a 555ps sure - but it wasn't necessary. This 3 box system is a one and done!

Good luck and best wishes.  Hope a bicycle helmet was worn

All the best for a speedy recovery HH. Hope you get home soon for some therapeutic music indulgence therapy!

As others have mentioned, the behaviour of many motorists around cyclists leaves a lot to be desired. We live in a country area with lots of cyclists. I frequently have to take evasive action when a car on the other side of the road overtakes a cyclist close to a blind bend.

Nigel - very sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you get better soon.

I do believe there should be more attention on aged drivers. My father continued driving into his late 70s, and wouldn't listen to us telling him he was dangerous - his eyesight and reaction time were scary. It took a very minor accident to make him listen, and in the end we almost forced him to stop before he hurt someone.

The degradation in capability can be slow and hard to perceive in oneself, and habit and pride play a part. It wouldn't be a bad thing to force everyone to retest at 70. It also wouldn't be a bad thing to force everyone to retest every ten years anyway, as I'm sure we all fall into bad habits.

Anyway, I hope you're back to getting full enjoyment from your 272 soon.

HH - like many before me,wishing you a full and speedy recovery. Also sorry to hear that your Cube was destroyed,. For a moment I was thinking of your Qb and wondering whether you had added a sound system to your bike. Hopefully it's still safe and sound and waiting for you in your kitchen.

ps - on the off chance that made you laugh, I hope it didn't hurt

Solid Air, too true took ages to convince my late father he was not fit to
drive at the moment the driving tests, medical checks and the justice
system when it comes to driving offences are not fit for purpose needs a
major overhaul.

Pete

Ooh, there's a sales opportunity for Naim - on-bike music. The doctors are worried about my intravenous antibiotics, so it looks like I'll be here for a couple more days. All the staff are lovely, but it's so bloomin' boring, and the food is not great. It's cooked in Wales, frozen and then shipped to Portsmouth. There has to be a better way.

Obviously Naim would focus on Porsche bikes of course.

Nigel -- the missus and I are sending you our best wishes all the way from New York City!

Can someone smuggle in a curry for you?

But not from Wales

Swift recovery thoughts to HH! As a (motor)biker, I know the dangers of some elderly drivers. Getting my dad to stop driving was not easy.

Re magicos -- I did warn you lot.. and the 500DR into the magico S5/2 is the best I've ever heard anywhere. Bar none.

Funny you should say that, as the veggie option this evening is chick pea curry.

All the best for a full and speedy recovery HH, I had the unwanted experience of being in hospital twice in the last 3 years, one leg fracture and one rather more  serious knee break, so  I can emphasis with the  boredom, and the limited menu....look forward to some future banter

Ps if you get really bored I can send a picture of my ropey old rack for you to comment on....

Good news! They have changed their minds and I'm going home this evening. I still feel dreadful, my right ear doesn't work, I'm banned from alcohol for six weeks and signed off work or two weeks in the first instance. But considering I nearly died, I feel very lucky. And when I get home, I can listen to my stereo which sounds better than others that cost $125,000. Can't be bad.

Fantastic news!

And the food will be so much better.

Enjoy....

Very good news HH see if they can do that promised vegetarian curry in a
take away.

HH - relative to what might have been you might see yourself as lucky but I see this as a bad deal for you.   But I'm sure you'll start to feel better once you're in the comfort of your own place.

On the subject of older people driving a few months ago I went out with my Dad (85) and to be honest I couldn't fault him.  But full credit to him he decided of his volition to give up before he did something wrong.

Posted on: 31 August 2016 by hungryhalibut

Yes, I know what you mean. It will be particularly distressing if my hearing is permanently affected. I have no problem with older people driving, but I do believe there should be some sort of compulsory review that picks up people like the guy who nearly killed me.

Posted on: 31 August 2016 by David Hendon

I shall be thinking of you HH. I hope it all goes well for you at home and in particular that your hearing recovers, given some time no doubt.

Walking around London today, with your terrible experience in my mind, I was especially careful crossing busy roads.

best regards

David

Good news that they've let you home early, Nigel.  But if they had kept you in for another few days you might have been able to pop into the home game against Crawley on Saturday.

Hi HH

Glad to hear they've released you.

In your honour I propose that nobody mentions Melco.

I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it.

Seriously, it's not only old motorists that are a danger to cyclists.

All the best...PJ

I have 0% and mean 0 upgraditis with my 272 setup. It really punches above it's weight and am not really certain what I would rather have - it checks all the boxes for my requirements and ears.

Hi Nigel

Do not be in too much of  a hurry to get back to work. I am sure they have told you this already , but you will have about some weeks of fatigue and impaired concentration ahead of you, and best to take things slowly. ATB.

To my shame, I have only just read of your accident, HH - wishing you a full recovery.

Posted on: 31 August 2016 by badger1963

HH, banned from alcohol for 6 weeks???? That's it, I will never get on a bike ever again.

Like others I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.
