S600 buzzing BMR

Posted by: rsch on 30 August 2016

I just got back from holiday  last weekend, turned my systems on. Apparently it was everything fine when the other night, while playing Pat Metheny cd Watercolors, with the second track Icefire, i heard a buzzing noise  on the right channel, coming from the BMR unit.  At the beginning i though it was a Fraimchip, but i soon realized it was from the BMR diaphragm. I ust called the local service and a visit is scheduled for next Thurday.

In the meanwhile he told me to try with a sequence of sweeping tones to find out at which frequence is resonating.

I had this once or twice with my S600. I cleared it by checking the leveling of the speakers (it is prone to it more when not level) and gently poking the back suspension to clear the 'sticking' - it appears to be the suspension fouling on something that once centred again is ok. The buzzing is the fouling of the suspension that has partially locked hitting a resonance.

That was what mine was - leveling and poking made it go.

Hi DB,

Thanks for the info, i already tried poking the rear suspension,  apparently it swings freely.

I will try with a little of spikes adjustment.

You have removed the little dust plugs?

Mine did that. Required a new BMR unit.

Probably best in the long run because having to 'poke' a speaker, 'level' it, or 'remove dust plugs' to return it to proper working order does not exude any confidence in reliability to me. Never heard of such things before, then again, it is a Naim speaker.

' Morning all,

I tried to fine adjust the base spikes, i removed the front grill but such noise and distortion is getting worse. Like our friend Massimo B. suggested,  i played a few tracks with piano and this is even more noticeable. With the grill off, to me, it seems just generating from the BMR diaphragm.

To be fair Naim/dealers advise removing the BMR transit bolt blanking plugs as they can vibrate. Might not be the cause of this issue but it's not a design flaw - at least as I see it!

What do you mean for dust plugs ? As far as i know there are only transit bolts for BMR suspension to remove

Little plastic caps supplied by Naim to insert into the holes in the rear plate through which your removed the transit screws. Best not to fit these as they can vibrate.

No, i have empty holes.

Visit from Italian Naim service centre is due for tomorow afternoon

Empty holes are what you want so we can exclude this at least. Good luck.

Just a quick update,

This afternoon our local technician came in. After a quick oscilloscope check,  it turned out a bad scratching noise at 1600 khz. So the diagnosis, just as i prefigured, is something unstick within the BMR.

I already got in touch with TomTom Audio and he' ll let me know soon.

That's unfortunate Roberto - hope it's resolved soon.

It' s odd, since James of TTA confirmed that prior of delivery, both BMRs were changed by a Naim "field engineer"

I hope the dealer sorts this problem out for you

i think naim should have kept the DBLS in production as they were an awesome speaker

Well, it only takes a look at a certain Suffolk dealer's webpage.

Yes, he was promptly keen to sort the issue. We are waiting replacement parts from Naim. Final job will be carried out by our local service centre.

Ultimately i think Naim shouldn't demise their loudspeakers range. Issue above aside, 600s are fantastic speakers, 400s too in their own class and Nsat are still quite special

This is what happens when you get farmers to fix speakers.

That's a bit left of field
