Extension lead required

Posted by: MRJ 1960 on 31 August 2016

i have recently had to move my Uniti2 and Neat Iotas into the dining room. This in itself is not an issue, but what is is that I have to power the Uniti2 from another room via an extension cable passed through a wall. Due to factors that cannot be changed for the foreseeable future I will not be able to run a spur.

So the question - thoughts on a good quality extension lead (I reside in the UK, so kit available there only please). Side (maybe silly, sorry mechanical engineer not a sparky) question - is there any point in installing a Powerline if it is fed from an extension cable?

Many thanks

You ought to be able to readily answer that one yourself.

As far as the extension it would be helpful to know how long a distance. If relatively short then a couple of Tibias might do the trick.

Is there any point in a PowerLine on the end of an extension,  its the same question as is there any point of one on the end of a 2.5mm UK ring main.

Depending on the length you need - I would just buy some decent cable such as Belden 19364 (from MCRU) plus an MK 13a ToughPlug & a socket strip with as many outlets as you need & make your own.      If you can do it with a 2m ready made extension, a Tacima CS947 is an excellent lead.

(Joerand's reference to "Tibia's" is a USA brand (& not available in UK)

Mike - I use Powerlines on the end of a home made RFI rejection braided mains extension - and they absolutely provide a positive benefit to most - but not all - of my Naim components. In my experience mains quality isn't necessarily all about cross sectional diameter of the the mains distribution wiring - cross sectional wiring diameter I guess gives a better indication of regulation if one excludes PowerFactor however the plugs and sockets have a significant impact as well along with how one sets up the safety earth arrangement in your house. I am an advocate of TT as opposed to PME earthing systems so as to reduce mains borne noise - but I am fortunate that I could have my property professionally converted.

Simon,  I am an electrical engineer & I'm not disagreeing at all with your post,  but the OP was asking what to do with a temporary extension lead set up.   I was trying to advise on a sensible way to do this & IMO Powerlines are surplus to requirements ITR.

Funny things those shielded mains cables. I always "felt" they had a negative impact.

This might seem simplistic and a very flawed theory but if there is any noise that is radiating from the cable, let it out I say before it gets to the distro strip...!

Might it work to buy some decent mains lead and put a 13amp socket on one end and an IEC female plug on the other, and not use the Naim lead at all. There would be fewer connections involved.

Good idea. Just make the lead up yourself (if you can wire a mains plug then you can wire and IEC plug). No need for anything fancy. Just get some mains cable from B&Q of the right length and you'll be sorted.

As Mike-B, I used the MCRU supplied cable kit to make up a 4 metre lead to supply a Unitilite in my bedroom system this as recommended by the dealer as opposed to using standard extension leads works a treat.
