N-serve connectivity
Posted by: John Toon on 04 September 2016
Hi, and another numpty question.
I am using a new NDX with QNAP NAS. The Naim APP/nStream is detecting the server and NDX fine. All works fine there. Problem is the N-Serve is not detecting the server. Seems odd one but not the other. Would love any suggestions?
Thanks all.
Brilliant and thanks Chrissu...will give this a go. I am now ripping using wav so I assume it is okay to mix Flac and wav files with the NDX?
Right. Stick Asset on your Qnap, using the guidance above. Then, once it's all sorted out navigate to the Qnap from your iPad. Add it to the home screen to enable you to shut it down or restart it easily. Navigate to Asset and put that on the home screen too, to enable you to control it, rescan etc from your iPad. Under the 'configure' option, go down a bit and you will see this area (below) and set the FLAC option as shown. Easy peasy.
Yes, you can mix file formats. You can also convert everything to FLAC later to save space if you prefer. Then, as HH says, try setting your server to transcode to WAV on playback and see if it sounds better.
Brilliant guys and thanks again so much. This should keep me occupied for a while then. Thanks again.

John - one word of caution with WAV - rip one CD and check if all the metadata appears correctly in that format. Generally speaking WAV is OK, but can sometimes be problematic (waiting for a warning shot from Mike-B now ).
FLAC is also ok to use - it's an uncompressed format and takes up less space than WAV.
John,
If you haven't already done so it's probably worthwhile downloading mp3tag for your PC. It's free (but you can make a donation if you wish) and is great for tagging both FLAC and WAV files.
Thanks Adam and caution noted. So far so good and metadata appears correctly. My understanding was that Wav sound better than Flac, but you do not sound convinced...ready to receive warning shot then.

The warning shot was meant for me
Mike is a big proponent of WAV files (just like me). Somehow he manages to make the metadata work for him and I typically make a big mess of it.
I don't think there is too much of a difference between FLAC and WAV when they are played back.
There are essentially two ways of playing back FLAC files:
1. Let a NAS serve files 'as it is' to a streamer. Streamer than handles the decoding and plays it back. There is a small chance that an increased computational load caused by the processing of FLAC files in a streamer, may cause increased noise floor in a system.
2. Let a NAS transcode files to WAV and serve a streamer with a WAV file. This would appear to be the most often used scenario. Hence the advice given above by Mr Peckish Fish.

I'll send Mrs Mike around with the SR15, she knows that CD's rip WAV perfectly, its only looneytunes that can't get it right.
Thanks Adam...good advice and noted. I'm on the case.
Mike - excellent!!!
............. & Adam, she's not just a poser with an SR15, she can get two (& more) .223's thru the same hole @ 100yds

A completely allien territory for me Mike - never fired a real gun in my life. But as I understand this is quite an achievement what you've just described.
Hello Team.
Slight set back. Things were going really well and have been building my library by disconnecting the NAS and taking to my Mac to upload new music, only this time the NDX cannot detect the streaming and also the NAIM app can no longer find the room. Also all the data on the Naim app has gone, presumably with my Palylist also. I have not changed any settings and as I said all was working like a dream.
Any suggestions please? As always I am extremely grateful to you 'guys (and gals) who know'.
John - you don't need to disconnect your NAS to upload new music. This can be done via the network....
For now... please shut down your network equipment and the NAS. Start the router and other things first and then start the NAS up again.
... or via flash drive (memory stick), but disconnecting NAS from the network is absolutely unnecessary
John Toon posted:For example when you are building a current play list and then accidentally tap a song that plays immediately, rather than just getting added to the play list you are building, the whole play list is discarded and you have to start again.
John, if you tap on the cog wheel (top right) for settings, go to "Other settings" and then check the "Tap for options" setting. If you check that option, then tapping a track will not immediately start playback, but instead present options (eg queue next, add to playlist etc.).

It's not that uncommon for the Naim app to lose Rooms. My setup trundles along fine and has worked happily for months. Then yesterday for some reason the app could not find my 272, though the Qb was fine. Switching off the 272 for 30 seconds and turning it on again got it working again. Eventually you get to realise what needs to be done.
And definitely don't move the nas. As said above, rip to your computer and then copy the music over the network. And don't forget to back up the nas.
Thanks Team. Great advice as always and back on the case tomorrow armed with these great suggestions. Sitrep to follow!
Sitrep: Back up and running and the fix worked thank you. Also now downloading from my PC using the net, and this just gets better. Now reviewing option for streaming HD/FLAC and downloading lossless format, and will take any advice. Once again you guys are my saviour and really grateful.
I use dpoweramp ripping to WAV no problems with cover art etc works well sounds excellent.
Glad to see you're back in business
Memory is cheap nowadays so just use WAV or AIFF.
Hi John,
If you are ripping your Cds via Itunes; go to >>preferences>>general preferences>>import settings>>; and then choose "AIFF" or "WAV" - it's the best option regarding Itunes and ripping cds. (Just in case, if you didn't discover yet)
Kacper
Thanks all. I have been ripping in FLAC so far and any issues mixing wave or AIFF?
