Muso or Qb

Posted by: Belfast Taxman on 04 September 2016

We will shortly have a new kitchen and looking to upgrade the sound system therein which was previously a Bose soundbrick fed by Spotify.

A pure SQ compare would I assume favour the Muso (I have heard one and my impression was that SQ was good but it was the control at a comparatively high volume level that impressed most) over the Qb which I have not heard. Against this is the price difference, not huge in a Naim context but still important when you are saving for Power Suppliesand also that SWMBO is concerned about the looks and size of the Muso.

so, two queries

How much better is the Muso and in what ways, if any?

i will be looking to use Tidal via IPad as the main source, previously I have read a lot of threads about streaming issues. Has the July firmware release made a big difference?

My personal opinion is that the Muso is too large for the kitchen. I suspect SWMBO would be happier in the long run with the Qb, and any sound quality improvements the Muso has over the Qb is probably too marginal in the long run to justify the "intrusion" in the kitchen. This is the route I have gone with my wife, who is quite happy with the 8" cube over the previous faulty and unreliable piece of junk that resided in the kitchen pre-Qb.

The Muso does sound bigger and better, but it's really very large and would take up a lot of space on the worktop, which may or may not be an issue. We don't use Tidal, but there have been no reports of problems since the July upgrade, which certainly improved the sound quality.

Wouldn't Tivoli be enough for the average European kitchen?

With a Muso in the kitchen, it's great to be able to use multiroom when you are cooking something that takes a long time and you keep moving between the sitting room and the kitchen. We have just had a new kitchen and had a wired Ethernet socket installed at the same time: I'd do that if I were you.

The footprint of the Qb lends itself for easy placement in a kitchen environment. I use one in the conservatory and it is excellent the multiroom facility is great bonus.

No.

I've got a Muso in the conservatory and a Qb in the kitchen. Both sound great, but the Muso is a definite step up in terms of sound stage and scale. The improved sound certainly justifies the extra expense imho, but as others have said it is a big beast. Use Ethernet if possible, as others have recommended.

good luck,

Paul

The qb as I think the muso is over kill in a kitchen unless you've got a house the size of a small hotel.

I had an arcam solo mini and wharfdale speakers in my kitchen and that was too much and wasn't used that much either.

I've had the Muso and now have the Qb in my conservatory study. I aware the Muso has the edge of the two, but personally prefer the Qb!

Isn't it the size of the kitchen that matters, not the house?

Be aware they both have a groovy crumb-trap that may appeal to SWMBO if close to food production areas...

I would need FM in the kitchen for ball games and talk shows.  That pushes me toward the Tivoli with Bluetooth or toward the UnitiQute2b which is a lot more money.

Our kitchen diner is 9m x 5m, house definitely not the size of a small hotel. The Muso is used for hours every day (Radio 4, Radio Paradise, streamed music and as a TV soundbar). Believe me, a Qb would not cut the mustard!

I have a Muso in the Kitchen and it works beautifully. However, my Canton soundbar recently crapped out.. so considering moving the Muso to the tv room to take on soundbar and music duties, and getting a QB for the kitchen.

The MuSo sounds bigger and more spacious. It's the best soundbar I've heard but it's still a soundbar. The performance will also be down to positioning, bass boost and material listened to. We also have a QB. It's remarkable. That something its size could sound so good is an achievement. Positioning etc. will also count. Both units are excellent for what they are. but then again, look at the prices. They damn well ought to be good. If space is a significant factor the QB has the potential to amaze. The fuller sounding MuSo. is much bigger.

I've recently moved back to the U.K. (having spent the last 18 months working/ living in the  Bailiwick of Jersey) where I was using a Mu-so as my main music streaming/ playback system + sound bar. Having returned, I have now invested in a Uniti 2 for the living room and so the mu-so has been relegated to a large kitchen/ diner/ office area (on a different floor) At first, it felt a little bit like overkill, but I much prefer the larger unit to the Q-B - both aesthetically and sonically (my neibour has one).
