Sbl grilles
Posted by: Naimark on 11 September 2016
Hello everyone,
I have just purchased a new set of grilles from puresound.
I have tried to use them without applying the self adhesive velcro using the original ones..
I would like to not touch the cabinet...any experience on that?
Thanks in advance.
mark
You have to use the self adhesive Velcro strips or they just won't work. They do look rather cheap and nasty, and the tops are not even level with the tops of the speakers. If it were me, I'd send them back and get a decent set from Tom Tom Audio. They are three times the price but look great and are properly made, unlike the Putesound ones that look like something you could knock up in your garage. You get what you pay for.
I will not pay 184 pounds (incl. shipping) for 4 pieces of velcro..this is simply ridicolous!
Puresound grilles are a good choice, especially after having seen tom tom price...
So please do not change the aim of my topic.
thanks
Not that £54.95 for four pieces of open-cell foam is peanuts... I assume your SBLs have no Velcro frames on the boxes: just apply them, it's no great deal. Or else, I am not sure I have understood your current situation. Do your SBLs' front panels feature Velcros already?
Thanks,
M
No peanuts of course but tom tom price is three times higher than puresound..please I don't want talk about it.
I didn't have the original grilles and I have purchased the puresound ones.
They are flat on the back so that puresound advice is to apply the self adhesive velcro on the cabinet (they are provided with the grilles).
hope this clarifies
Well, stick them on then. What's the problem?
So, have I got this right...? The OP has bought a non-Naim aftermarket part for Naim SBL's, but is not happy...? For reasons not clear.
A sensible suggestion by a long standing and knowledgeable Naim Forum member @hungryhalibut, to return the items bought and instead then buy the (arguably better ) TomTom version is rejected...?
I have never found that penny pinching works well with HiFi. But perhaps the OP disagrees....?
I had Puresound grilles on my previous pair of SBLs, and really liked them, at least as far as one can really like some bits of foam. Looked smart to me. So I disagree with the 'only tomtom will do' view.
But you're going to have to use the Velcro to hold them in place, or they'll just fall off.

I've got half a tube of ' no more nails' left In the garage, ....its a permanent solution...and very cheap ![]()
Hifi is not aestetics even though many people hear with eyes...
I don't recall getting the velcro strips when I bought the TomTom replacement grills for my SBLs - but they are very good imho ![]()
Sorry, but I still do not have the complete picture and do not understand (the only thing clear to me is not wanting to give away a fortune for a supposedly 'more original' spare part – some is either original or it is not, and we're just talking of the common polyurethane after all..); do the SBLs' front panel have a Velcro strips' frame, or do they not? If they do have it, it is enough to stick the grilles in place. If they don't have it, well it is enough to use Velcro (the 'receiving' part, the one less smooth, with the micro-hooks) to stick a frame around the speakers.
In short, Mark: do your SBLs look like this

or like this?

Max
Naimark,
Max is spot on with his pics which should make things clear.
Understand that you don't want to hear about the tomtom ones but they really are rather good! Lewis posted some great pics of them if you want a look. Edges are correctly cut, and rears are scalloped as per the original JV design. Might be worth considering down the line if they look better than your cheaper ones?
HH, have you looked into tomtom doing SL2 replacement grills?
Stu
My grilles are fine for now at least. The issue I suspect is that while there must be thousands of SBLs out there, there are far fewer SL2s. Speaking of which, have you ever thought of getting some, as they are much better than SBLs and your system would be perfect with them.
I did Nigel.
Had a long dem when they came out, I really wanted to like them (which I did) but they didn't have the majic that SBLs seem to have for me, but understand why others love them. Never see them second hand anyway.... Nice to see you posting again and hope you are on the mend.

Fair enough! I have only one functioning ear, which is really frustrating, but hopefully it will clear. The consultant said that maybe it would, but then maybe it wouldn't! I should get a new bike soon, which will be great as soon as I get less wobbly, as I cannot drive for at least six months.
Not good Nigel, both hobbies given a clout one way or another. I love cycling, did a nice lumpy 25 today, but you do feel its only a matter of time given all the near misses! Maybe I should strap those tomtom grills to my head when out...
New bike sounds nice though...

Walk into your local DIY store (e.g. B&Q), pick up some self-adhesive plastic 'velcro' (not the cloth type, and use the hook side only. Worked fine for me when the original Naim 'velcro' decided to fall off (probably will help from my grandkids). Still using the original grills on my SBls after many years.
