A very, very basic question about an Atlas optical toslink cable

Help.

We have a brand new mu-so qb, a rega CD player to feed it and an Atlas optical cable to connect the two.

Now, we have never used an optical cable before, ever.

The Atlas cable comes with what looks like tiny blobs of translucent silicon rubber on the end of each connector, presumably to protect the ends of the fibres.

So here's the question and please don't laugh:  Are we supposed to peel off the silicon rubber before inserting the cable into the mu-so qb and the cd player?

We have checked the Atlas Cable manual, which is full of words, yet strangely nothing about these little end caps.

Yours most ignorantly & humbly,  Baldrick.

p.s. this is not a hoax question!

Yes, the silicon rubber protective caps must be removed.

Some optical cables come with protective caps attached to the cables, for protection of the glass ends when the cable is stored.

Also, you'll see that the connector and socket are shaped so they only fit one way round.  If you look carefully at the end of the cable, you will see the connector has a flat top and a rounded bottom. You need to match that to the socket. The ribbed bits are always on the sides, but the location of the flat section on sockets can be on the top or the bottom of the socket (I wish this were standardised) . Once lined up, the plug should click firmly into place.

Brilliant, thank you Jan.  Just what we needed to know.  Now up & running.

Good, what's it like with the Rega?

It works a treat! What's more, we can still use all the other wireless sources of music as well.

Such a versatile little box.
