Standmount speakers for Nait XS + Hicap
Posted by: hancoock2367 on 24 September 2016
Hello to all. My system consists of:
Naim Nait Xs + Hicap, Kef LS50, Dac Gustard X20 DSD, sub Rel T5.
I want to change the speakers that are best of Kef hoping to have a tangible improvement.
The room is about 16 m2 with arched opening on the left well furnished.
Listening to music in general country rock jazz no classical (pink floyd, Dire Strits, Nora Jones exc.)
the speakers that intrigues me are
Dynaudio focus 160
PMC Twenty 21
Proac Tablette Anniversary

in the picture the old with the 5si
You want an improvement, but of what?
LS50s are very good speakers, although not at the same price and quality point as your Dynaudio/PMC/Proac shortlist.
You need a Supernait. Then you can consider true step ups to things like Kudos Super10s.
Frank.
Even with my modest Nait XS I found speakers to make a huge difference - not arguing against SN here, but for my ears a Nait XS is worth some nice speakers
The Twenty.21 are nice but PMC only do the old Twenty range in black ash now. The price has come way down though. A second hand pair may be an option.
Might be inclined to give Linn Majik 109 a whirl too. At your price point you are really spoilt for choice for standpoints that sound excellent with Naim.
If you are open to the idea of compact floor standers, I highly recommend you try Neat SX2. Very enjoyable with nait XS and a Hicap.
On the subject of compact floor standers I use a pair of the new Neat Iota Aplha's with a Unitilite they are excellent.

I also have a pair of Iotas and when I want to have someone fun, I plug them in to my SN2 and they are indeed very special. Yes I know a SN2 with Iotas is an overkill, but who cares
PMC 20.21's on the end of a Nait XS is an excellent combination IME.

I entirely agree, but is that the kind of sound that the OP likes? He might find the sound a bit too analytical for non-classical music.
I have Dynaudio Focus 160s on the end of a Naim 202/200 combo with a TP PSU. Love the sound, treble is detailed without a strident edge. Vocals really shine and bass is deep and controlled. I moved to them from Epos ES14 and have never looked back. Prices are good too and I really suggest that you audition them.
BTW, Pink Floyd, 80s electronic, Stereophonics, Oasis etc is my thing. The Dynaudios love it.
Hi interesting thread ..... I auditioned LS50 and thought them fantastic....... however went for PMC 20.21 .... as the rear ported LS50 cabinet needed more space than I could accommodate. The PMC to me were more tuneful and fast in the base...with a lovely explicit midrange. The LS50 is more like a turbocharged LS35A .... compared to PMC a slightly more relaxed open nature with a deeper but less controlled base. Looking at your picture... you appear to have reasonable space....so I think you need the best possible source/amp you can afford. I think the PMC would possibly be a side step..... the only way to really tell is to audition. I used a Nait 5i temporarily with my 21's and it did sound pretty dam good.
thanks for the comments.
Le Kef are really great speakers, I only find that the bass is a little bit artificial.
I am seeking a speaker with a dry bottom.
example I loved the Harbeth P3ESR
there is something similar but faster?
Dry and fast? That'll be the PMCs for you then sir! They won't come in white though.
I know that there are not white but it does not matter.
the important thing that sound good with naim xs
