First naim system

Posted by: Jamesie on 26 September 2016

hi all , I am new to the forum, having just purchased my first Naim system , 72/hi cap/250/nat02/sbl mk2 ,walnut/olive. Jumped in at the deep end a bit and bought the complete system from the original owner , I must say a large improvement on my current Cyrus units , the 250 is off to Salisbury shortly as its internals haven't seen the light of day for 22 years ,and the mids are a little distorted , I was at first concerned that I would not like the SBLs having read "love them or hate them" reviews, but so far I like the forwardness and the incredible bass response ,even at low volumes , but I also think my source may have something to do with that , I have a Meridian 602/606 combo which came with the system , very nice but I am going to replace with a Naim unit in the near future, when the 250 returns I shall get it all set up properly and add some pics .

Welcome to Naim ownership and a great combination of 72/hi cap/250 !
I'm a huge SBL fan, having owned them for 13 years before I swapped to NBL's.

Enjoy the music

Jamsie - I'm sure the previous owner mentioned this: NAP 250 should be run with a Naim speaker cable - NACA5 is perfect. Minimum length: 3.5 meters.
The NAIM speaker cable provides the amp with an additional stabilisation and is actually needed for the amp to run correctly.

Enjoy the music,

Adam

Adam ,The system came with 30 metres of a5 so I know it's not a cable problem with the amp , from a bit of digging the distortion I have seems to be the caps on the regulator board , or at least that is normally  the problem , the 250 is well overdue a service , and for what I paid for the system I don't mind spending a little on a recap. I shall start with the 250 then the hicap and the72.

Excellent!

By the way - you also need to service your 72 and HiCap if they have not been serviced before.

If you send the amps to Class A in Sheffield it will cost less and take one week rather than five. I'd do the 250 and Hicap at the same time. While the pre would benefit it's not so important.

I have looked at the costings for Witch hat and Class a and Naim for the 250 , the reason I am using Naim for the 250 is that resale value is considerably increased should I ever decide to sell or upgrade , my local Naim dealer is only 15 minutes away , the 72 hicap and 250 are all going into them and they are going to identify which unit has the immediate problem and deal with all the return process for me , I think the cost difference is only about £75 to have Salisbury sort the 250 for me , as I don't have to do anything with regards packaging extra insurance etc this option suits me better , I just drop it off and pick it up when done , the hicap and 72 however is a much cheaper option at Witch hat or Class a , I am going to drop it in this week ,then I am away for a month working so in no real rush to get it back. This is going to be my first experience dealing with Naim and I am new to Naim ownership so I feel like I should give them a try ,
