Naim NAC 72 power

Hello everyone,

for good or bad (I really hope it's for good) I decided to join the Naim fans by building a vintage setup.

I'm really newbie with Naim gear but will try to give all the info I have and hope for good advise.

Two of the components I purchased (Naim NAP 140 CB, actually 110 but upgraded by Naim to 140 and NAC72 olive) came yesterday. They were sold as fully working and the NAC72 is really in very good cosmetic condition and I can say it was never open for any kind of intervention...but, when I conencted them, the NAC72 was not working. The Naim logo of NAC72 was not illuminated. I can hear a very faint  music from the speakers connected to the NAP140 and it is not affected by the volume pot rotation of NAC72.

As I know that in this kind of setup the power amp supplies the preamp, I checked the voltage, which was measured as 24.2V. I also checked that it comes to the preamp by measuring it inside of the same value 24.2V. I checked every pin of the 4pin Naim cable (Snaic? or whatever it is called) and all the wires and pins are working fine.

While waiting approval to post on the forum and ask for advise, I checked a little more and can see that NAC72 actually have 2 rails of 24V inside. One is powered by the power from the power amp and connected to one of the pins of the +24V comming fromt he Hi-Cap socket.

The other +24V rail is however connected only to the 2nd +24V of the Hi-Cap socket. The 2 +24V rails are not conencted between eachother.

And the one only supplied by the Hi-Cap, powers NA325 board (switch on relay). So it seems I don't have power to this board.

Can this be the reason for NAC72 not working?

Do I need HiCap?

Can I connect the 2 +24V raisl to be powered by the NAP140 until I have HiCap?

English is not my primary language so if I didn't explain something well, please tell em and I can provide more details (if I know them).

Do you have the 5 pin link plug fitted to the upgrade socket of the NAC72? If you are powering from just the power amp, ie no hicap, then you'll need this otherwise the preamp won't power up.

I see now

I don't have this 5 pin link plug (I didn't know such one exists)...and I think that's what it is doing.., to connect the 2 rails until the owner of NAC72 buys HiCap .

So maybe I should wait 2 more days until the Hicap I ordered arrives and not play with the pins.

Definitely don't play with the pins. Either get the right link plug or wait for the Hicap. Actually just get the link plug anyway, you should have it.
