Network Access in University Room for Qute & Naim App

Posted by: Gavin B on 29 September 2016

My son's just started at Loughborough Uni and has taken his Qute with him. His campus room has both wired and wireless access but the Qute doesn't seem to be able to access the internet through either because the Uni system forces a user to go through a registration screen in a browser.  This is obviously the main issue but it does raise further issues with using the app.  If he did get the Qute onto the wired network, he'd still have problems using the app because his phone would be on a different network.

Any ideas about possible solutions?

Would an Apple Airport Express be a possibility? (But how would that get onto the wired connection?)

Thanks

Realistically it's not a question we can answer with certainty ... ideally he'd set up a cable router of some sort (with the WAN connection to the campus wired network) to create his own local network but the login requirement side of it would need to be sorted out and only the campus network admin guys can advise on that...

I wonder if a workaround might be to connect a computer to the network, and share its connection with the Qute? Simple to set up on a Mac, and presumably Windows has a similar facility.

I've looked a little at the Loughborough HallNet information and it appears he should be able to manually register the MAC address of the Qute to allow it to connect to the network.

and from there

https://hallnet.info/cgi-bin/Roombase4/macmanage (Think you will need to be connected to the Uni network for this link)

should help.  He may need a small switch to allow connection of multiple devices - a Netgear GS105 or similar would be ideal.

Thanks everyone, that's helpful.

Phil - I think I've got an Netgear router somewhere, that could be a possibility

Chris - does this require the laptop to have to network ports? I don't think many Windows ones do - mine doesn't

Eloise - that looks helpful - I'll point him to these links

If your computer has no Ethernet port you can use a USB to Ethernet adapter. I use one at home on my Mac - you can buy a shiny white Apple one for £25 or a higher spec unbranded one from fleabay for £6.99. I chose the latter, and it works fine.

If he's going to do that then he should register the MAC address of the WAN side of the cable router with them otherwise he has all of his kit exposed on what is essentially a public network ... use the cable router as a NAT firewall to keep all his devices tucked away and the campus only see one device from his room.

You could look at getting a travel router, such as the TP-LINK TL-WR810N (~£30 on amazon) which is designed for having multiple devices on sign-in style networks. The router has a wifi access point with it's own private network. You use a brower to connect to the router which can use the hotel / university logon to connect. The router then shares that connection with all your devices on your private wifi network. Just connect the qute to that network.

This trick also works for devices like chromecasts.
