Could someone at Naim pls. tell Hoop.la to stop messing up the forum...

Posted by: totemphile on 19 July 2011

...and to take the feedback provided by those using the forum on board?

The new change, which now puts the navigation bar also within each single thread is just awful!!

Besides the fact that hardly anyone seems to find this section useful, it now has narrowed the space for comments even further, making for a very unpleasant reading experience.

Lots of suggestions have been provided by people here on the forum and a simple search will bring up plenty of feedback. The most recent thread "Hoop.less does itself proud..." can be found here:

Many thanks to Naim for listening to its customers.

Best wishes

And why has the thread text section become even narrower, and more difficult to read?

Posted on: 19 July 2011 by pcstockton

WTF.  Come on guys.

What happened to "mark all post as read".  Best feature ever on this forum.

This is worse than ever.

I am on a standard fare 15" lapper right now and I have even less screen than before.  Now it is less than 50% of the screen width.

Wake the F up England.  And while you are figuring your shit out, please reverse the left and right "OK/Cancel" buttons.  Do you do everything backwards?

At least your hifi is dialed.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just when we were getting used to you ruining everything we love, you slap us in the face with this pile of crap.  I avail myself to your design team.  No charge.

Sorry posted by mistake - I was going to praise the new layout, but I can't find the edit button it's moved again,

Posted on: 20 July 2011 by Simon-in-Suffolk
I must admit it is now worse than ever.. On my windows machine text disappears in boxes and on my Mac air laptop there is too much scrolling and cluttered presentation.
Surely Naim should advise Hoopla that the forum mechanics should be transparent, we come here to chat and exchange ideas with others, not to puzzle out and wade through new frustrating GUIs every couple of months like some bizarre Internet browsing assault course.

I've just looked in here for the first time in months, in the hope that things might have improved. Well! what can I say. This forum is absolutely shit.

As things are it is almost unusable, the text disapears depending where the cursor is and the giant avatars split the thing up so much that you struggle to read it.

I don't think I'll bother looking back in, from what I can see, most of the contributors who I used to enjoy appear to have left in any case.  What a shame, this used to be a great forum.

Over and out.

Absolutely... agree with everything here... why don't Naim do something about it? Could somebody at Naim please answer?

Posted on: 21 July 2011 by JamieL_v2

I agree, and was about to post in the same manner as Hook.

The forum is getting like Facebook, more about how the forum works, and less space for actual content, suited to morons, but useless for the kind of people who (used to) populate this forum.

When we post messages will it start recommending other messages we might like, that strangely have no relation to what we have posted.

Getting worse and worse, and I really tried to be positive for a while, as I like the people here, but the replies to threads are getting fewer and fewer as Hoopla mess thing up more and more.

This happens with Windows Internet Explorer version 7 or below it seems. I use 7 and am getting exactly the same, it is horrible and renders the forum almost useless, nothing anybody would want to put up with for a prolonged period of time. IE 8 might work, don't know, but not everyone wants to upgrade. That's the problem when using technology / plugins where only the latest software works!

The forum is generally fine with Firefox it seems or at least the version (4.0.1) I am using. Although I get a banner at the top telling me "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page." But at least the Avatars are to the left of the post and not above as with IE. They also are a lot smaller, which is better. Their size on IE vs. 7 is just ridiculous.

This has been going on for well over a day now. Are Hoop.la just going to leave it at that and expect everyone to upgrade to IE 8, install plugins, etc. It ain't gonna happen, people will continue to leave instead and others who come back and see the sorry state of this forum will leave it at that.

What a major marketing disaster. If I had anything to say at Naim I'd be screaming down the Hoop.less phone lines and sue their sorry lot for compensation! Aren't there mirror sites you can try new developments on, does every single change even if sh*te have to be done on the live site???

All the recent changes have been for the worse. It's all been a major f*ck up!!!

Posted on: 21 July 2011 by George Fredrik

If the forum is valued by Naim then it will be sorted. If not then we must assume that Naim actually do not value the Forum.

And it is it's dying on its feet as it is ...

What a shame. Perhaps the old style format could not be kept going for some reason, but since the big change it has gone from hard to adjust to, to being grotesque in functionality and looks. And the serious posters in many cases have now gone. Thus it is hard to keep a good thread going. But unless things are simplified and made functional again, anyone who pops back in hoping for an improvement is simply going to leave pemanently.

At least everything looks stable and in place using Safari, much better...

I popped back in to see how things were going. You see, I was convinced that this changed forum was a long running wind up, and that eventually i would be able to log on and find it had reverted to the previous version, but clearly I was wrong.

Whilst many may consider this all to be an improvement, it is not to my taste and I am going to go back to playing Mafia Wars and listening to my system.

What ever you do Naim, please do not let Hoopla loose in the factory - they aren't wise in the head!

All the best

Come on Naim. Sometimes you just have to dump 'em and start again. No one likes it...

However, thinking about it some more, since I've been spending far, far less time on the forum, I've also spent absolutely bog-all on Naim products. So actually, I've changed my mind. Keep it as is. You've saved me thousands. Must have been your gameplan all along. I knew you knew what you're doing.Cheers.

You know it makes sense.

I'm wondering why people are still using IE7, when IE8 has been around for a while, and indeed we now have IE9 !

Must admit I still have/prefer the interface of IE8 to IE9, and have it on my PC (for web testing), though my browsers of choice in order are Opera / Firefox / Safari.

I updated to IE 8 as I thought maybe I too could resolve this issue with an update... Well on my Dell laptop it doesn't....... well not so far.

Using Chrome now, seems better for the Forum at least!

Hi Geoff,

Version 7 was installed on my work laptop by our IT department. I could ask them to upgrade but quite frankly don't see any real need for it. I tried vs. 8 or so on my private laptop once before I moved to a MacBook Pro but somehow did not like it very much. I guess it's part of human nature, once you got used to something that works people are somewhat reluctant to change, unless there is a need for it. At work we used to use Office 2003, moving up to 2007 had it's benefits but I still find myself occasionally trying to figure out where certain things are that I knew how to use straight off in the 2003 version. Software always moves on but on balance the headache of getting to grips with newer versions often outweigh the additional benefits for the average user. Hence the reluctance to always go with the newest stuff out there and that's not taking bugs, etc into consideration.

Anyways, I am sure there are plenty of people out there using IE versions lower than 8 or 9. It seems silly to come up with a website that's all flashy but a headache to navigate cause it's all over the place. As has been pointed out before, sometimes less is more.

Switch to Chrome - it is much better than any version of IE

Not sure it makes the forum any better though - agree with TP a good web designer should avoid being browser specific - best sites use no Flash and plain HTML - what about Lynx users?

Up their places, where the sun don't shine strikes me as as a reasonable description of everyonr woorking at, and everything about Hoop;.la, including the silly-clever name ...

A shame that Naim were duped into accepting their [false] promises ...

A shame that Naim have not dumped them, even if this meant the immediate finish of the Forum ...

One might conclude that Naim actoally want to kill the Forum. and that would indeed be Paul  Stevenson's pre-rogative. But why not simply put it down like some old and kindly pet, rather than going through these painful death throws ...

Put it down while the going was good rather than allow this wreck ... don;t watch the struggle, like some desperate old dog trying stoically to breath when the case for life has clearly been lost ...

A suitable dose of phenobarbitone would be aweful, but prefereable to this ...

Hi George -

Such a morbid post!   I hope that you are not even half as sad as your words would imply.

It's been a tragic weekend for many, and it is certainly understandable if that has effected your view on everything, including the layout of this web site.

But the facts are that we can still read, post and search the archives.   And while I am as frustrated as anyone with the substandard work Hoop.la has delivered (and Naim has accepted), I think we have to ask ourselves, is that really a good enough reason to quit this place, or root for it to be shut down?

I still very much enjoy the content of this forum, and have a great deal of respect for the creators of that content.  Could this place look better, and be easier to use?   Of course!   But that does not stop me from logging in, and learning new things about music, audio, and just about everything else, just about each and every day.

Anyway, maybe I am being overly optimistic in an attempt to balance your downer of a post, but until Paul comes out and says it's done, take it or leave it, I am going to hold on to my thin thread of hope that Naim will someday make this place look right.   In the meantime, since Naim is doing such a fine job of ignoring our continuing efforts to provide feedback, I suggest that all forum members should take advantage of this upcoming summer road show to let any Naim representative you see know exactly how you feel about the forum layout.

And George?  Feel better soon.

Dear Hook,

I am fine. Lots to sort out in the coming days, but in many ways - on a personal level - many things are straightening out after many months, but the truth is that the debate here is a very pale shadow of what it used to be even a year ago. I suspect that the Forum was a in a gentle decline before the change to Hoop.la, but this has noticeably accelerated since the change about six months ago. May be the whole concept has worked itself out and so is unlikely ever to attract the kind of quality posting  from some many view points and posters that it once did.

Whatever the precise cause, I don't think it is unthinkable to consider the whole future of the Forum, given the state it is in now.
