Could someone at Naim pls. tell Hoop.la to stop messing up the forum...

Posted by: totemphile on 19 July 2011

...and to take the feedback provided by those using the forum on board?

The new change, which now puts the navigation bar also within each single thread is just awful!!

Besides the fact that hardly anyone seems to find this section useful, it now has narrowed the space for comments even further, making for a very unpleasant reading experience.

Lots of suggestions have been provided by people here on the forum and a simple search will bring up plenty of feedback. The most recent thread "Hoop.less does itself proud..." can be found here:

Many thanks to Naim for listening to its customers.

Best wishes

I do NOT like the half page width of the page layout. The sooner it is centred and occupies at least 80% of the screen width the better.

Equally importantly, I have just had to replace my router (not my brouser nor my ISP, just the router). I am now experiencing many of the glitches described by others that I had previously be free of.

For example, when I "mouse" over the text or the action-keys of a post, the entire post diappears. This means I can no longer reply to a specific post or "copy & paste" - totally frustrating and one more step on the way to "can't be bothered any more"

Cheers

Because I can't edit my posts anymore, (text just evaporates when i put the mouse anywhere near it) I now have to add a new post post just to modify a previous one.

I am using Windowa XP with IE8.

The Microsoft website recommends IE8 as the appropriate broeser for XP. It only recommends IE9 for Vista or Windows 7

Is there a "fix" for this "vanishing text" ?

Cheers

TP, its been Naim's Summer break this last week.  Next week I'm going to the factory and will be discussing the state of the current forum.  My personal view is that I'd like to see a better use of the real estate available.  It works just great for me on Firefox but it would be good if it worked just as well on other browsers.  Hoop La have to get that right at the very least.  At least it works much better on Safari on my iphone now.

Please add full iPad functionality to your wish list.

Richard, I know and a well deserved holiday too. The problems with the forum precede the summer break though. When I started this thread I was not referring to design features or the new look so much, these are minor things really. As you say the forum works well on Firefox and Safari now but try Windows IE and you are in for a frustrating experience, the posts are disarranged and what's worse as soon as you move the cursor off the scroll bar and onto the page all posts just disappear, there is no way to edit posts, etc. If technical problems persist, fair enough, but why can't anyone then come out and inform people how to solve it or at least let the users here know that it is being looked into and will be addressed? Instead three weeks have now passed and those using IE get more and more aggravated. Judging by people's feedback it has nothing to do with what version of IE you are using, the same problem occurs with IE version 7,8 or 9. Surely it must be in Naim's interest to avoid people leaving this place or worse be pissed off with Naim. Hoop.la have been awfully quiet too even though they posted on problems in the past. It all just doesn't make sense from a business point of view, let alone if customer satisfaction is of any importance to Naim.

If its not broken, don't fix it.

Conversely.. I could conclude - if it is broken, then do fix it - the Naim Forum that is.

The msgs above leave little doubt. These days, many web browsers are used, and most sites manage to cope. So... I also conclude that Hoop.la are not competant in website design.

(Not sure if this msg will post... my last one never appeared... hey, this one did...!!

And, I can still edit, using IE8, on XP...)

So,

I see that "helpful" line at the top of the Naim screen saying "your browser is unsupported, Please change to a modern browser. .........Internet Explorer 8"

I am already using Internet Explorer 8. And the technical workings of this forum are a complete mess. Absolutely hopeless.

Naim..........PLEASE................... FFS get something done about this.

Cheers

Anything to report after your meeting last week Richard?

Do you believe there could be any relationship between the state of the current forum and sales of naim equipment?  Seems to be a bit of voom-vavo missing compared to the previous forum presentation and I do wonder if that could have any impact on revenue.

Hi,

I agree with others here, the forum seems broken or botched, one of the two.

(Using Windows IE9)

The clock is still 1 hour forward for the UK.

Posted on: 26 August 2011 by Richard Dane

Well, initially I had this....

It sounds like the issues are all isolated to various versions of Internet Explorer.  With our last release, we made the decision to no longer officially support IE7.  This is in line with other online services such as Google who need their users to be on modern browsers in order for certain features to function properly on their site.  IE6 has been unofficially supported in Hoop.la since its inception, so IE7 was just recently added to that list.  The reality is that IE7 is an outdated browser that has a relatively small market share (in the 5-7% range of all browsers depending on where you go for stats).  All modern versions of Windows (XP, Vista, and Windows 7) are all capable of upgrading to IE8 for free, so the first recommendation for your users is to upgrade their browser.  IE9 is our recommended version of IE, but it is only available for Vista and Windows 7 (also as a free upgrade).  Other capable alternatives are Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.

With all of that in mind, it does sound like there may be an issue or two that are affecting IE 8 and possibly 9.  We'll be investigating on our end and will report back our findings.

So awaited the results of their investigation.  The results...

We have investigated these issues, and we're unable to reproduce any of the problems at all on your site.  We have tested in Internet Explorer 7, 8, and 9.  Are your users still complaining of these issues?  I don't see any new posts to the topic that you linked to.

If you have any extra information regarding these issues or if you can confirm that they have been fixed, it would be helpful.

I have again linked to this thread, so please, those of you still experiencing problems, could you post as clearly as possible your OS, browser, version, and the specific issues you are experiencing.

Thanks!

p.s. Incidentally, there are no reported issues at Naim HQ where AFAIK they run Windows XP and Windows IE of various versions.

The forum is working just fine for me on both Vista and Firefox (latest) as well as Windows 7 and Firefox (latest).

However, there is another audio forum I sometimes visit that doesn't work at all well whenever I am using my mobile broadband router.  Really strange and seems to affect about one in 20 websites, especailly those forums running Vbulletin software.  Very annoying.

You need to sign out and sign back in again.  Then the clock should automatically show the correct time for wherever you are located.

Ta very muchly.

Posted on: 26 August 2011 by Richard Dane

OK, here's the latest:

I am taking a look at some of these issues.  Could you get additional information from the users who are experiencing issues?  Specifically it would be good to know what version of IE the users are using.  Not just IE8 or IE9, but full version strings.  For example I tested your site with:

IE 8.0.6001.18702

and:

IE 9.0.8112.16421

Update Versions: 9.0.2 (KB2559049)

Both of these version worked great and did not cause any layout problems or cause any of the HTML on the page to disappear on mouse over.  One thing we may need in order to fully test is end user login credentials.  Non administrative.  It could be that there is JS on the page that is causing this issue for regular users on IE.

I did test your site in IE 7 as well though that is not a supported version for our application.  We are actually using some new CSS which allows the site to be much more configurable by web designers but is not supported at all in IE. This lack of support is why users who view the site in IE7 will see the forum layout as extremely broken up and disjointed.  Any users who are using IE7 should upgrade to IE8 or IE9.  If they would rather keep IE7 then they should install FireFox, Chrome or Safari as those are all browsers we use here at the office and know work well.

Hopefully we can track down any remaining issues.  Its difficult to track down a problem when you cant reproduce or see it.

Hi forum architects,

For some reason just recently i cannot use any of the quote, multi quote or edit functions, also eveytime i hover the cursor over the text i get a blank page.

All was ok before and AFAIK i've not changed a thing?

Using windows 7 pro (IE9)

I've disabled Java script?  to no avail ... mmm ...

Posted on: 26 August 2011 by Don Atkinson

Richard,

I am still experiencing the "mouse-over" problem.

When I move the mouse over the text of a post, the texts of all the posts on that page disappears.

If I "nudge" the mouse very carefully across the text area, I can sometimes find a "sweet spot" where I recover the lost text. When I move the mouse to the right hand side of the text, the text normally re-appears.- but not always. I sometimes have to move to another page or another topic before returning to the required page. I can then read the text, subject to the usual mouse-over problems.

The posts themselves do not feature the edit icons nor the reply with quotes icons.

The Avitars sit above the post text (rather than alongside)

I am using Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.260 Service Pack 3 Build 2600

and Internet Explorer Version 8.0.6001.18702

Cheers

Don

PS perhaps you could point out to Hoopla that many of us are British. This means that we don't keep repaeting our "complaints" every day. Also others, seeing that a problem has been flagged up, refrain from raising the same complaint.

Hello All,

I am actually a software developer at SocialStrata.  I just finished running through some more tests and have not been able to reproduce any of these issues.

Don,  I actually tested on the exact same version of IE that you are using without any success at reproducing the same problem.  Does this happen for you on all topic pages or just some?  Do you have any plugins installed in your browser?  On our QA box we are running all of the browsers in pretty much their stock settings, with no plugins.  Another thing to check, what are your security settings?  Anything noteworthy there?

Cheers,

Jonmark

Frank, actually those forums don't work for everyone.  See my post earlier.  I can't use any vbulletin forum properly if I go through a particular broadband provider - no page loads unless you're really persistant going backwards and forwards. Switch modems and provider and all is fine again.  Weird.

Anyway, at least one of the Hoopla guys has become a forum member so he can see what happens when logged in as a member rather than admin.

Thanks to all so far who have been so explicit with issue, OS and browser.  Anybody have anything new of different then please post ands let's see if we can't try to get to the bottom of it once and for all.
