NDX stops mid-track and says Input Initialising

Posted by: Beachcomber on 02 October 2016

Recently my NDX sometimes stops mid-track and says Input Initialising.  This is a bit of a  bugger, just when you're really enjoying the music and suddenly - nothing. It's been working fine for some time.  Main changes is that I recently added a Philips Hue hub, and after that Amazon Echo.  Could it be something to do with one or other (or both) of these?  And if so, any idea how to find out which and what to do about it?  If not -then what?

Thanks

Steve

You could just turn them off, then you'd know. Are you using a wired connection - if not, try it.

Assuming nothing else has changed, try disconnecting one of the new items and see if the problem stops or continues. If it continues trying swopping for the one item. If still continues disconnect both and see if it goes back to being stable. If/when the problem stops then you have probably found the offending item/items. Once you know which it is I am sure there are many experts on here that can help identify the cause.

Yes - I shall try that.  I'll report back...

Connection is wired, BTW.  Going through TP-Link mains wall warts (only option, unfortunately, but generally seems to work well).

90% sure it is the Echo that is causing the problem - possibly by sucking all the bandwidth from the network.  Turned Echo off, ran for several hours without a problem on the NDX.  Turned Echo back on, and after about half an hour to an hour, NDX loses connection.  Repeated this several times now.

Not sure what to do, really.  I already have a few paperweights, so I could use the Echo as a doorstop, but it really isn't heavy enough.

Just as a test could you temporarily run a network cable instead of the Ethernet Over Mains units? Echo doesn't have much in the way of bandwidth requirements in itself but I've seen a couple of oddities with EoM devices either locking up or resetting themselves when I was showing my Echo to friends who were using EoM devices in their networks...

Hi Phil,

tricky - the music room is the other end of the house from my router (3 rooms away - SWMBO might have things to say about it.  She has about most things - particularly negative things about HiFi equipment and the space/money it requires).  I might be able to try to run a very long (30 or 40 metre) ethernet cable down the outside of the house...

<mutter>drill - masonry drill bit - longer bit - nope, even longer drill bit - ladder - tape measure - stud finder - bigger ladder - vacuum cleaner - cable - ethernet plugs - crimper - that should about do it </mutter>

Can't you just run a cable from one room to the other just as a test for a couple of hours?

I'll give it a go next time she's out.

Used to get input initialising on my NDX not so much on streaming from my NAS but when changing from NAS to Internet radio or vice versa  since I've had Audioquest Cinnamon ethernet cables and a new switch this has stopped the NDX was always hard wired ?

Is it when playing from a particular source? TIDAL? Internet Radio? UPnP? Spotify Connect?

I've not noticed it on Tidal (I tend not to use Tidal a great deal at a time) - it happens on UPNP which I use a lot (most of the time, in fact).  The PC running the Asset server isn't very far away - maybe I could put a hub there and run a cable from that to the NDX...

If you can hard wire both your PC and your NDX into a switch and then connect the switch to the router (whether directly or via the EoM devices) then that might get us a bit more information to work from...

OK, I'll see what I can do.
