streaming from Synology - issue

Posted by: Kacper on 04 October 2016

hi everyone,

I will try to explain what kind of issue has been recognized in my case.
I do have a Synology DS214 connected to the router TP-LINK and from TP-LINK to the streamer (everything wired).
Sometimes when I'm listening albums in 192khz aiff I can recognising "empty spaces' - no sound just for seconds ( no disconnection) and it's happening randomly (sometimes I can listen all album without of any problem)
After these 'empty spaces' usually the sound is back.

Is anyone here who have a clue about those kind of issues?

..... Can you try an alternate UPnP media server say from a Mac or PC as a test - and serve a file from the PC or Mac instead of the NAS? i think that will either rule out the network and possibly rule in the NAS

Any luck with this - I think it will cut to the chase quite quickly. Your static noise episode sounds disconcerting however

Still no update on this? We appear without it to be going around in circles?

Yes, I'm testing connection from my Mac via Asset UPnP and so far until now - no problems.

next time I will purchase something in wav, usually I do "shopping" at HDtracks and they have multiple formats available including wav.

Why wait,  get dBpoweramp & convert the albums that you have now to WAV,  or make copies & convert to WAV & FLAC & try them all.

Also forget HDTracks, way too expensive.  You get the same stuff for less at Qobuz & in many cases cheaper still at HighResAudio,  then with dBpoweramp you can buy whatever codec is on offer & convert.

I get my ECMs from highresaudio for £14, whereas they are over £16 at Qobuz, and sometimes even more when they mess up the pricing, which seems to happen rather often.

Guys - I don't think it is format dependent - AIFF and WAV are essentially synonyms.

look for server faults.

That's true, Qobuz in many cases is cheaper than HDtracks, here is the example:

http://www.hdtracks.com/the-co...-doors-studio-albums

http://www.qobuz.com/nl-nl/alb...-doors/0603497933105

HDtracks Germany sometimes is also cheaper than U.S. version.

and with Qobuz after purchasing the album - there is a possibility to download the same album multiple times. With HDtracks I believe only once, so if data from server will be lost and no backup... then

You can download HDT numbers of times,  not sure how many.  I believe Qobuz limits to four times.

Good to know, I thought only once.

Hi Mike-B,

Synology help desk also advise me to delete all application which I don't use (incl. antivirus essential).
Why in your opinion the switch is so important if the router has a gig ethernet ports?

Kacper

Goede dag Kacper,  I feel the Synology advise to uninstall unwanted programs is a good one,  remember its not uninstalling from the Synology system, they remain in the Packet Center (store).   But not having them running means they do not use any OS resources.

Re "why switch"    I have seen poor wireless router performance a few times,  once on my own system & twice on friend's systems & in all cases a switch fixed it.    I am not sure how "intelligent" wireless routers are & I'm sure it varies between models. Gigabit  port speed doesn't indicate how suitable it can handle switching data & address management.  I also suspect some router chipsets do not manage data as does a genuine switch.   Switches are able to handle far more traffic because they send & receive simultaneously & communicate only with the devices they are programmed for,  the "unmanaged" switches,  such as most of us on the forum use, do this by learning the MAC addresses of the devices they are to communicate with so the two way streaming traffic between your NAS & ND5 is only between them.

goedenavond Mike,

Thanks for your advice, I will test one from TP-LINK. Those units are not so expensive, in local media markt approx. 24 euros.

Hi there,

short feedback about the issue. Since yesterday I'm testing switch from TP-LINK and didn't notice any problems or disturbance yet.

So lets hope the problem has been resolved.

Hi Kacper,  did you notice any change in SQ ???  I ask because I have heard some improvement changing from wireless hub to switch,  but have yet to hear any change in SQ between switches (expect with a defective switch)   (& with better PSU - wall warts)

Hi Mike,

well, This what I thought already last Friday at the evening  when the switch was already in use - there might be some improvement in sound quality.
