Mu-so + QB multiroom with Spotify? Does it work?

Posted by: Hemmendorff on 05 October 2016

Hi, i have a mu-so in my living room, and was planning to add a Qb for my bedroom. So i went to my local naim retailer with the intent of getting one. But when i asked if multiroom worked with Spotify they said "No, due to licensing blaha it can't be played on two devices at once". I found some old threads on this forum suggesting the same.

But according to naim's website, it should work (by using one as a master, which is streaming to the other, bypassing spotify's one-device-limit, as i understand it).

 "To play audio from one Mu-so to another, select material for playback from either the Airplay, Spotify, TIDAL, iRadio, or UPnP inputs and touch the Naim Audio App multiroom icon" - https://www.naimaudio.com/conn...mu-so-hints-and-tips

"Version 4.3 will enable [...] Spotify Connect in multiroom mode and benefit from a host of minor bug fixes" - https://www.naimaudio.com/news...o-streaming-products

Someone must know if this really works?

Yes, Spotify Connect works in Multiroom. Not just with Mu-sos but with Uniti also. Now listening to Dinosaur by Laura Jurd in two rooms. Would show you screenshot if Naim supported image uploads.

You were right to ask though. The quote is wrong in that Multiroom is NOT supported foe Airplay.

"Now listening to Dinosaur by Laura Jurd in two rooms".  Were you born with this strange superpower or have you somehow developed it?  How far apart can the rooms be?

ok

foe -> for

listening -> playing

But I do have two Mu-sos (and so two virtual rooms) in the same physical room

This is excellent news, thank you so much for your reply Dayjay! I'm happy to hear about uniti as well since i'm thinking of expanding my system even more soon.

My retailer also said that Airplay on multiroom is not supported, so it seems they were at least half right. There is apparently some confusion. But seeing how this works for another user i feel confident in at least Spotify which is my primary music source.

So that's how to get higher in the rankings

Noname but plenty of Naims over 30 years

Oops, it was Noname i was supposed to thank.

But thanks Dayjay as well for the quick offtrack into the supernatural.

Sincere apologies for the humour, clearly out of place.  I would guess that your dealer is taking at crossed purposes.  Unless you play in off line mode, or have a family membership, you can only have one physical connection to Spotify at any one time.  Therefore for "licensing reasons" you couldn't play a song via Spotify in one room (or even in the same room on two devices) and play a different song in another room on a different device.  However, providing both devices support multi room you can play the same song on multiple devices in different rooms as this only used one connection to Spotify.

Apology declined, superpowers are never out of place.

Well, unless your superpowers extend to making Spotify sound decent, you'd do well to try Tidal. Spotify is ok for occasional listening, but you are wasting your mu-so using it as your main source.

I use Spotify to try out new artists/albums and to follow playlists, such as from Edition or BBC Playlister.

For my own stuff I do not stream. I play directly from high-def files stored on an iPad through the USB port into a Mu-so which also supports Multiroom. Never got into UPnP.

Noted, i actually downloaded Tidal yesterday to give it a new try. I've previously tested the difference and found it to be fairly random from song to song what i preferred. The majority of blind tests between streaming services i've seen seem to point in the same direction.

At least to my (maybe insensitive) ears it seems a lot of the superior listening quality above 320kpbs is pretty much placebo.

But then again, i did download it to give it another shot and i hope to prove myself wrong

I'm not sure what you mean by 'downloaded it'. All you need to do is enable the input in your mu-so and sign up to the service. Naim streamers, including mu-so, come with a three month free subscription.

Assuming you're using Tidal HiFi (i.e. CD quality streaming) it's certainly better sounding than Spotify on most, but not all material. Spotify does seem to have a better selection of music though, and if SQ wasn't an issue, it would be my choice for subscription based streaming.

Regarding multiroom, Apple Airplay will play to multiple devices, but only from a computer, not from an iOS device - maybe this is a source of confusion. Not a problem if you're using Naim multiroom though, as this should work between Naim devices regardless of Apple's limitations.

Should perhaps but No. Naim Multiroom is not supported for Airplay despite what they themselves announced in early promotions. Naim say this is because of licensing restrictions (although other vendors seem to have got round this somehow).

But if you're playing on a Naim streamer you're not using Airplay for Spotify, so I can't see that it would be an issue?

We seem to be misunderstanding each other. The initial question was about using Naim Multiroom. Naim originally claimed (see quote in first post) this was supported for Airplay streamed to the master Mu-so as well as Spotify streamed by the Master Mu-so. As I have said a couple of times now, Airplay streamed to a Mu-so is not supported for Naim Multiroom.
