Naim App for windows 10 on a surface

Posted by: ttarczy on 05 October 2016

I have the Naim app for the iPad which I am now getting rid of as I have the Windows Surface Pro, slick piece of kit. So where can I download the app for Windows to control my Naim system?

Many thanks in advance

You might want to hang onto your iPad !

Really, I am just getting sick of everyone thinking that Apple is the only solution out there. Great devices but they are not productive business tools. I have been an Apple user for the last 8 years however I have to run parallels to make office work which the business uses.

Surface Pro 4 is way ahead of Apple, as it is a great tablet with the power of a desktop. Apple missed the opportunity in my humble opinion.

That's all as maybe but there is no Naim app for windows. Looks like you will be using the remote control then.

There is a windows desktop controller to control your HDX or Unitiserve if you have one though, but I guarantee you won't like the user interface at all.

Hopefully Surface Pro will take the market by storm and maybe then Naim will produce one.  Thank you for your response.

I wouldn't hold your breath. I know the Surface Pro is a nice device in the tablet/PC crossover space, but it's expensive compared with an entry-level iPad which is cheap as chips in a Naim context.

I have a surface pro 4 i5, lovely bit of kit, its a shame Apple are so out at sea at the moment.

That being said I can understand why naim wouldn't develop an app for windows, anymore than for OSX, the apps were for mobile devices running mobile OSes with 'apps' on.

Windows continuum will see convergence even more and I suppose only a matter of time till they sort their mobile out and get surface phone out the door. Probably spelling the end for 'legacy' desktop win32 etc applications, and making way for apps in the desktop market.

Its only round the corner folks. Frankly after holding a surface for 6 months, running a full OS, apple laptops suddenly feel very old fashioned and iPad pros confused.

You could always try an Android emulator. I've used Bluestacks running on a Windows laptop and successfully run the Naim app on it.

BlueStacks for Windows 10 is completely free and handy utility that allows you to install and run Android applications directly on your system.

For the streaming side there are a number of DLNA control point applications that will work on Windows 10, but I can't remember which ones work with Naim.

Unfortunately MS removed proper DLNA compatibility from the Windows Media library routines after Windows 7, so you won't be able to use Widows' own media applications to send audio to a Naim streamer.

Simply not true. Cast to device works just fine.

Thank  you to everyone for your responses. I will research the various options.

I have never used any Naim app. I did try bluestacks and the android app but gave up after a few uses. Simply not worth the effort.

I create playlists in MediaMonkey - including one called Recently Added because I want to play new stuff most - and then use the remote to play them. This works very well.

Sometimes I use my SP4 with the Synology app and occasionally I use cast to device directly from Win 10.

Aha, so they've finally given up on WMP compatibility and reverted to DLNA 1.5, well well!

Yes Bananahead it does work again now .  I hadn't realised they'd changed the policy as my main PC is Window 7 (and that has always had the DLNA version of the library).  For a time the WMP 12 library (DLL) functions would only <Cast To> WMP compatible devices (rather than general DLNA devices, and the only WMP compatible device from Naim is the NDX).  I checked this with the programming interface published in MSDN and the behaviour was by design - the WMP 12 library version in Win 8 and WIN 10 was only compatible with WMP compatible devices and not with DLNA devices.  However, according to the latest MSDN, MS now seem to have dropped the whole WMP compatibility layer that was previously preventing <Cast To> operating with all other Naim streamers, and yes it now works with the 272.

So yes I stand corrected: Now it does work again - they've finally done the right thing and removed the restriction.

I would like to add my name to the list of those requesting naim app for windows 10 surface. I have an ipad so that's not an issue. When I'm working on my laptop/surface, I'd like to be able to control my UnitiLite without having to go and get my ipad

Personally, I prefer my Naim control to be on a separate device to the one I am working on.

Plus one asking for a Windows 10 version of the Naim App.

If someone from Naim is looking for a tester (alpha or beta) for such an app, then I'm willing to volunteer. I use Win 10 on Laptop and also Win 10 mobile.

The Surface Pro is a great tablet.  My company just jettisoned the iPad for the i5 Surface Pro.  Linn Kazoo app is a Windows App, although I have not tried it yet.
